Cochise College, a leading institution committed to accessible education supporting meaningful careers, proudly announces a milestone in first responder training. The First Responders Academy (FRA) has completed two groundbreaking projects, including constructing a 4.8-acre driving track and introducing an immersive ambulance simulator. These state-of-the-art additions revolutionize the training methods employed by first responders.

This event offers attendees an exclusive opportunity to witness firsthand the advancements in first responder training. The showcase will allow visitors to explore the ambulance simulator and its capabilities. Appetizers and refreshments will be served. Bereket created the design using a computer-aided design (CAD) program called Vectorworks. The CIC was able to secure an in-kind donation of the inside of a Wheeled Coach van ambulance from EMStar Ambulance in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Additional wood, paint and other supplies for the platform were donated by the CIC. DCC donated the wall posters depicting the inside wall above the bench seat, which makes it look like a real ambulance wall. The wall graphics for the Vassar project were donated by Hudson Simulation Services (HSS). HSS is the developer of the graphics and trademark holder of the name Simbulance. Labor was contributed by five EMT interns, a few students of the Vassar EMT class and the CIC.

Having the students load and unload the stretcher from the Simbulance teaches them important skills, including time management and the practical application of in-class learning that they need to perform as an EMT working on an ambulance.

The SUPER study, which surveyed EMS programs nationwide, found that many EMS programs have the ability to implement simulation, but simulation is only used one-third of the time by instructors. This problem of reluctance to use available simulation tools has many roots, including instructor training, insufficient time to train, instructor ability to be comfortable with technology, and lack of time to develop scenarios that meet learning objectives and will work well with simulation. Many EMS instructors are working full-time as providers on an ambulance and report to a lab session at the end of a shift, making lack of preparation time a real issue. Creating realistic simulation scenarios that make sense to the student takes time, effort and experience.

Nearly 10 years ago, Demers had the idea to convert a vehicle into a simulator. From his original design, Demers and his team began developing the concept along with Echo Healthcare, a Florida-based company that specializes in immersive spaces and educational software.

While enrolled in the EMT course, William stresses the importance of completing the workbooks and attending lectures. He was impressed with the accuracy of the ambulance layout and the functionality of the stretcher. Both will be useful in preparing students for common experiences as an EMT.

Current student Ryan Hendrickson first heard about the EMT program through an acquaintance at the Orange Fire Department. He is most interested in learning about patient care and the proper way to help others. Hendrickson is looking forward to having access to the ambulance simulator while working towards his EMT certification.

The mixed-reality simulator contains an ambulance, which has multiple TV monitors in place of windows that showcase the simulated scenario as the simulator rocks and sways like an actual ambulance would. Students are able to experience not only a realistic scene of an ambulance in motion but also the act of providing medical treatment to the patient using a VR headset.

Rottweiler said by March of next year, the college will add four more simulators at Cochise College's Downtown Center in Sierra Vista, which houses the college's nursing, fire science, paramedic, and EMT programs. CBS Pittsburgh reported that due to the high number of ambulance crashes in western Pennsylvania, EMS West teamed up with EMS Virtual Drive to teach EMS providers how to prevent more accidents by learning what to do with a simulator.

PCC has partnered with three county organizations to develop a $350,000-$400,000 state-of-the-art, high fidelity mobile simulation vehicle to help its students simulate real-life emergencies. After more than three years of planning and development, partners unveiled the vehicle on March 5, at Hillsboro Fire Station No. 6, where it will be housed. The vehicle is equipped like a fully functioning ambulance. The college contributed $100,000 in bond program funds to buy the interactive on-board mannequins that breathe, sweat, bleed and even talk for use on the vehicle.

They will be used to train students on inserting IVs, advanced airway and life support, chest decompressions, injecting fluids and medications directly into bone, and other life saving measures. The ambulance is outfitted with sophisticated audiovisual equipment that allows students outside of the vehicle to observe what is happening inside as a critical element in the debriefing process.

At PCC, programs such as emergency medical services, medical assisting and fire protection housed at the Cascade Campus, and dental hygiene and nursing based at the Sylvania Campuswill utilize the mobile simulator at some point. In addition, Saito said he plans to take the vehicle out to K-12 schools for healthcare education events to show students the opportunities that are available in healthcare.

Christopher Mundell, an EMT student, said that only about three people can fit in the back of an ambulance, including the patient, so there is limited space for an instructor to guide students through each lesson and scenario.

Bush said the simulator allows students to get comfortable with being in the cramped back of an ambulance and to know where the equipment is before transitioning to practicing in the ambulance outside, where students also will have to adjust to a moving ambulance.

MTC purchased the ambulance simulator using the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century grant, which is a federal grant. The simulator was constructed three months ago, just in time for the new group of EMT students.
