If you want reliable sound isolation and a rugged, collapsible build for on-the-go studio work or for dj sets in loud environments, choose Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M30x; if you need an airy, wide soundstage with velour comfort for long mixing sessions where ambient bleed is acceptable, choose SAMSON SR850G.
• Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M30x: Offers excellent sound isolation and a durable, portable design with 40mm drivers tuned for mid-range definition; the trade-off is its closed-back nature which limits soundstage width. Best for DJs and producers who need to block out noise and transport gear easily.
• SAMSON SR850G: Delivers a spacious, open sound profile with 50mm drivers and plush velour cushions for all-day wear; the trade-off is zero sound isolation due to its semi-open design. Best for home studio engineers and podcasters prioritizing mix accuracy over portability.
The Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M30x is built around a philosophy of utility and isolation. This headphone features a circumaural design that contours tightly around the ears, creating a physical seal that excels at blocking out external noise. For anyone working in a busy environment—whether that is a crowded practice space, a club setting while for dj performances, or a noisy home office—this level of sound isolation is not just a nice feature; it is often essential. The 40 mm drivers, utilizing rare earth magnets and copper-clad aluminum wire voice coils, are specifically tuned to enhance detail and provide excellent mid-range definition. This makes them particularly effective when you need to hear the nuances of vocals or instruments without the distraction of background chatter bleeding into your monitoring.
Portability is another defining characteristic of this model. The construction includes a collapsible mechanism that allows the headphones to fold down significantly, saving valuable space in a bag or case. When combined with the single-side cable exit, the setup reduces tangling issues, which is a practical benefit for anyone constantly moving between gigs or studios. The build quality feels substantial, utilizing aluminum components in the enclosure that suggest durability. While the weight is listed as 7.8 ounces, the balance of the unit ensures it stays secure during movement. The fact that this specific unit comes through the Amazon Renewed program means it has been professionally inspected and tested to function and look like new, backed by a limited warranty that provides peace of mind regarding its operational status.

This product is ideal for the mobile professional or the student producer who needs a dedicated pair of monitors that can handle rough handling and varied acoustic environments. If your workflow requires you to switch quickly between different rooms or locations, or if you frequently perform in settings where you must isolate yourself from the crowd, the M30x is the logical choice. However, those seeking a natural, "open room" listening experience will find the closed-back architecture limiting. The very feature that gives it strength—isolation—also creates a more contained sonic image. You should skip this model if your primary use case involves critical mastering in a perfectly quiet room where you prefer the breath of air and the natural stereo imaging that only an open design can provide.
The SAMSON SR850G takes a completely different approach, focusing entirely on reference-quality audio reproduction and long-term wearing comfort. Its semi-open design is the cornerstone of its performance, allowing for improved ambient listening and proper acoustic bleed. This architectural choice results in a wider soundstage and better stereo imaging than a fully sealed cup could ever achieve. The proprietary large 50mm drivers, equipped with rare earth magnets, deliver an extended frequency response that aims to present listeners with an airy high-end brilliance and a true midrange. This clarity allows you to hear subtle changes in a mix that might be masked by the resonance of a closed-back earcup. The frequency range extends impressively, aiming to let you hear audio exactly as it was meant to be heard, which is critical for finalizing a track before release.
Comfort is equally paramount in the design of the SR850G. The earcups utilize velour cushioning, a material known for being breathable and soft against the skin. Unlike synthetic leather pads that can cause heat buildup and sweating during marathon sessions, velour allows the skin to breathe. This is paired with a self-adjusting headband that distributes pressure evenly, ensuring a secure yet natural fit that does not pinch or clamp too tightly. For musicians, podcasters, and studio streamers who spend hours daily behind the console, this level of ergonomic consideration is non-negotiable. The inclusion of a gold-plated 1/4" adapter alongside the standard 3.5 mm connector adds versatility for connecting to various professional interfaces and consoles directly. The graphite finish also adds a sleek, professional aesthetic to the workspace.
You should buy the SR850G if your environment is controlled and quiet, and your priority is absolute sonic accuracy and comfort. It is the perfect companion for tracking, mixing, and mastering where you need to trust every frequency response without coloration. However, because of its semi-open nature, it offers no sound isolation. Sound from your speakers will leak out, and sound from the room will leak in. This makes it unsuitable for live performance scenarios, such as for dj gigs in loud venues, or for use in shared apartments where noise discipline is required. If you need headphones that function as a barrier between you and the world, this open design will fail you. But if you need headphones that feel like they are part of your room's acoustics, providing a wide, immersive soundstage for deep focus work, the SR850G stands out as a superior tool.
• Best for Sound Isolation → Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M30x: The closed-back circumaural design effectively blocks external noise, making it superior for loud environments.
• Best for Soundstage Width → SAMSON SR850G: The semi-open architecture provides a significantly wider and more natural stereo image compared to the contained sound of the M30x.
• Best for Portability → Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M30x: The collapsible design and single-side cable make it much easier to pack and transport than the bulkier SR850G.
• Best for Long-Session Comfort → SAMSON SR850G: Velour ear cushions and a self-adjusting headband offer superior breathability and fit for hours of continuous use.
• Best for Mid-Range Detail → Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M30x: Tuned specifically for enhanced mid-range definition, ideal for vocal-heavy mixes or live monitoring.
• Best for Extended Frequency Response → SAMSON SR850G: With 50mm drivers and a design targeting 10Hz to 30kHz (as per data sheet), it aims for a broader dynamic range.
• Best for Mobile DJ Use → Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M30x: Its isolation and durability make it the only viable option for sweatproof gaming headphones for dj style high-energy environments.
• Best for Home Studio Reference → SAMSON SR850G: The combination of open design and velour padding makes it ideal for best comfortable neckband headphones for dj style long-form production work, though these are over-ear.
In my opinion, the choice between these two comes down to your specific environment and workflow requirements. I would personally choose the Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M30x if I needed a versatile pair of headphones that could go anywhere, from a quiet home studio to a bustling club. Its ability to isolate sound and its collapsible form factor make it the more practical tool for a mobile lifestyle, including scenarios for dj where noise control is vital. However, if I were strictly stationary, spending eight hours a day mixing tracks in a treated room, I would opt for the SAMSON SR850G. The comfort of the velour pads and the expansive soundstage it provides would allow me to work longer and with greater confidence in my mixes. Both are solid tools, but the M30x wins on adaptability while the SR850G wins on pure sonic openness.
Yes, the Amazon Renewed Audio-Technica ATH-M30x is designed with sound isolation capabilities that make it suitable for loud environments, whereas the SAMSON SR850G is not recommended for such settings due to its semi-open design.
The SAMSON SR850G features velour cushioning and a self-adjusting headband, which generally provides better breathability and comfort for extended periods compared to the standard materials used on the M30x.
While neither is marketed specifically as a gaming headset, the SAMSON SR850G's open design offers great spatial awareness for immersion, while the M30x offers isolation for focused play; however, for best hifi stereo earphones for dj applications, both serve well depending on your noise environment.
