If you want a pair of headphones built for long, uninterrupted studio sessions with legendary German durability and superior passive noise isolation, choose Amazon Renewed Beyerdynamic DT 770; if you need versatile monitoring gear with swiveling earcups for one-ear checks and a travel-ready bundle, choose Audio-Technica ATH-M40x.
• Amazon Renewed Beyerdynamic DT 770: Its greatest strength is the legendary comfort and robust build quality designed for hours of critical listening in noisy environments; its trade-off is the lack of swiveling earcups and fewer included accessories compared to the competition. This pick is for the producer who sits for long shifts and needs reliable sound isolation without distractions.
• Audio-Technica ATH-M40x: It shines with its flexible design featuring 90-degree swiveling earcups for DJ-style monitoring and a comprehensive bundle that includes cables and cleaning kits; the trade-off is a slightly heavier overall package and a design focused more on portability than the DT 770's stationary studio endurance. This pick is for the mobile creator, DJ, or student who needs a toolkit ready for the road or the classroom.
The Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro is an instrument of focus. When you put these on, the world outside fades away thanks to a closed-back enclosure and soft velour ear pads that create a seal around your ears. This isn't just about blocking out the office chatter; it is about creating a dedicated acoustic space where you can hear every nuance in a mix. The low-mass coil and diaphragm assembly work together to produce transient performance that rivals much more expensive electrostatic systems, offering a natural and balanced sound profile that doesn't lie to you. If you are working on a podcast or editing audio for a video project, this accuracy is non-negotiable.
Comfort is the second pillar of why I recommend this model for specific users. The lightweight build and adjustable headband distribute weight evenly, ensuring that after four or five hours of wear, your ears don't ache. The cushion system is specifically engineered for long-duration sessions, making it a staple for recording studios and post-production rooms. Whether you are wearing them over a headset or directly against your skin, the spring steel headband provides a secure yet relaxed fit that holds up day after day. This is not a headphone you take off every thirty minutes because they feel tight or heavy.

However, this product is not for everyone. If you are looking for a "kids headset for pc" that comes with bright colors or extra features like a boom mic, this is not the tool for that job. It is a serious piece of professional equipment designed for adults who care deeply about fidelity. The single-sided cable makes handling easier, but the lack of swivel means you cannot fold the earcups to monitor one side while keeping the other cup on your ear—a feature some DJs and singers rely on. Furthermore, while the refurbishing process ensures functionality testing and basic cleaning, it ships as a renewed item rather than brand new, which might not suit those who demand pristine packaging and full manufacturer warranties beyond the 90-day limit.
The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is designed for the person who moves. Its standout feature is the circumaural design paired with 90-degree swiveling earcups. This allows you to rotate the left earcup forward for one-ear monitoring, a critical function for DJs mixing live tracks or vocalists listening to their own voice while singing along. The earcups also fold up to meet the headband, saving significant space during storage. If you are carrying your gear in a backpack or traveling between locations, this compact folding mechanism is a massive advantage over the rigid, non-folding design of many competitors.
Versatility extends to the connectivity and what comes in the box. The detachable cable design exits from the left side, making it easy to distinguish sides and swap cables if one gets damaged. The bundle includes both a coiled cable and a straight cable, giving you options for different setups. You get a screw-on adapter for professional interfaces, plus a carrying pouch, sanitizer spray, and a cleaning cloth. This all-in-one approach makes it an excellent choice for students or hobbyists who might not have separate accessories yet. The 40mm dynamic drivers deliver a flat, accurate response and wide bandwidth, ensuring that whether you are gaming or mixing music, the sound remains true to the source.
Despite its strengths, the M40x has limitations for certain use cases. The item weight is listed at 2.2 pounds, which includes the carrying case and all accessories, but even the headphones themselves feel substantial compared to the ultra-lightweight DT 770. If you are searching for the best spatial audio sleep headphones for pc, the closed-back nature and potential for clamping force might make them less ideal for lying down compared to lighter, open-back alternatives. Additionally, while the included accessories are great, the headphone itself does not come with a microphone, so it is not a communication headset for online meetings or gaming chat unless you add one separately. It is strictly a monitoring tool.
• Best for long studio sessions → Amazon Renewed Beyerdynamic DT 770 (Superior comfort and velour pads for hours of wear).
• Best for mobility and travel → Audio-Technica ATH-M40x (Foldable earcups and compact carrying pouch included).
• Best for one-ear monitoring → Audio-Technica ATH-M40x (90-degree swiveling cups allow instant switching).
• Best for passive noise isolation → Amazon Renewed Beyerdynamic DT 770 (Robust closed-back design minimizes external bleed).
• Best value with accessories → Audio-Technica ATH-M40x (Includes coiled/straight cables, case, and cleaning kit out of the box).
• Best for durability → Amazon Renewed Beyerdynamic DT 770 (German engineering with replaceable parts and spring steel headband).
• Best for low-impedance mobile power → Amazon Renewed Beyerdynamic DT 770 (32 Ohm version optimized for smartphones and laptops without amps).
• Best for flat, accurate response → Both offer pro-grade performance, but the DT 770 leans toward natural balance while the M40x focuses on wide bandwidth.
For my own setup, especially when using headphones for pc to edit audio or mix tracks late at night, I would buy the Amazon Renewed Beyerdynamic DT 770. The combination of the "Bass Reflex" technology and the velour ear pads creates a listening experience that feels less fatiguing over time. While the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is an incredible value with its swivel feature and bundled accessories, the DT 770's reputation for German engineering and its ability to handle high-powered setups or mobile devices with ease makes it the more serious investment for anyone treating audio production as a craft. If you need to sit still and listen deeply, the DT 770 wins; if you need to move around and switch modes quickly, the M40x is your partner.
Neither model is explicitly marketed as a "kids headset for pc." They are professional monitor headphones designed for adult use, though the DT 770's adjustable headband offers a range of sizes that might accommodate older children, provided the volume is managed carefully.
No, both models are wired headphones connecting via a 3.5mm jack. The DT 770 uses a single-sided cable, while the M40x offers detachable cables, but neither supports Bluetooth or wireless transmission natively.
Since both are wired headphones, they do not have internal batteries to deplete. Their operation relies entirely on the connected device providing power through the audio cable, meaning there is no battery life concern for either unit.
Yes, both provide excellent sound isolation and accurate frequency responses suitable for gaming and streaming. However, since neither includes a built-in microphone, you will need a separate boom mic or headset for voice communication during gameplay.
