Measuring latency and availability of asynchronous systems is challenging, and debugging can also be tricky, because requests bounce around between servers and can be delayed in places outside of each system. To help with distributed tracing, we propagate a request id around in our queued messages so that we can piece things together. We commonly use systems like X-Ray to help with this too.
Some systems can tolerate very old messages being dropped. For example, some systems process deltas to systems quickly, but also do full synchronization periodically. We often call these periodic synchronization systems anti-entropy sweepers. In these cases, instead of sidelining old queued up traffic, we can cheaply drop it if it came in before the most recent sweep.

Backpressure is not suitable for all systems at Amazon. For example, in systems that perform order processing for amazon.com, we tend to prefer to accept orders even if a backlog builds up, rather than preventing new orders from being accepted. But of course this is accompanied with plenty of prioritization behind the scenes so that the most urgent orders are handled first.
Probably I just have too many pending downloads and a slow connection. But, perhaps the Kindle is stalled. I was seeing a "downloading" note in the top left, but, not at present -- and yet there are books which should be queued for download.
We then navigated to the books my wife had queued up for the remainder of our trip and she tapped the Kindle screen to open one of them. Her Kindle informed her she would need to exit Airplane Mode to download the book. Lesson: Queueing is not the same as downloading.
Next, we did what any two rational beach readers would do, we ran back to our beach chairs, grabbed our Kindles, and made a beeline back to the resort where we casually parked ourselves just outside but near enough to get the Wi-Fi signal. Knowing this might be our only chance, my wife downloaded all her queued books, and I found Stephen King's Button Box trilogy on Libby (through my phone) and downloaded all three books to my Kindle.
AFAIK, you cannot remove items you have "purchased" from this list. It keeps them on the amazon side, not on the device. I have wiped all data from my device, and once I reinstalled amazon app store, all of my purchased apps appeared in the list.
When you pause the queue, processing continues on in-progress models. As those models complete, workers become available for the next queued model. The position is not filled until you un-pause the queue. Click the play arrow to resume building models. ff782bc1db
