WHIDBEY, UNITED STATES
The house appears intentionally modest and humble from the valley, deferential to the pastoral farmlands below. The house was designed as both retreat and part-time residence for a growing family with strong local roots going back several generations on the island. Intended for summer BBQs, fishing retreats, and family gatherings, the house was designed to be flexible and durable, and reflect the layered history both of the site and the family itself.

The central design concept was to split the building into three pavilions.
"This does a couple of things, the rooms between the various functions of the house are more intimate, and the landscape is able to weave in and out between the rooms. Each of the three main buildings is framed with black metal beams and columns. Large glass windows and sliding doors front the rectangular volumes, which are topped with flat roofs that span over the edge of the structures.

An interstice was left between each of them, and the position in the floor was adjusted to the topography of the land, therefore, the 3 modules are not completely parallel to each other. The way to unify them was done through a totally transparent corridor in their two faces, to emphasize the union that exists with the forest, and to be able to contemplate the architecture of each one of the modules of different points of view during the circulation routes of home. The roofs of the two new modules were made using the same angle as the original cabin, but in the opposite direction, respecting the angle of the original cabin in one direction, and the two modules obtaining a new identity inspired by the pre-existing architectural object.

JARSON RESIDENCE | WILLSEN AND PARTNERS
PARADISE VALLEY, ARIZONA USA
This house is designed as a vessel of personal discovery for two real estate professionals with an educated passion for modern architecture and their two sons. Gracefully embracing the topographic fold of a desert wash, the house focuses on the northeasterly view of the McDowell Mountains in the distance. Entry, office and bedrooms, are on the upper level with the primary living and dining experience, a media / music chamber and potter’s studio tucked beneath. Cork and concrete floors, wall planes of translucent glass, and cabinets of cherry and stainless steel articulate the interiors. The upper level entry and passage are conceived as galleries for the owners’ art collection. The stair down to the collective living spaces plays against the subtle drama of the angled south façade, to draw you to the desert beyond where the double height living room takes you to the sky.

BIGWOOD | OLSON KUNDIG
SUN VALLEY, UNITED STATES
The clients wanted a modern house that would feel authentic to the high desert mountain landscape. So it is rugged; the client calls the style “mountain industrial.” Everything that touches the earth is stone and board-formed concrete, and everything that projects out is steel and glass. The roof is made of corrugated weathered steel and slopes slightly. The wood finishes on the interior are intended to make the occupant feel warm and protected, in weather that can at times drop to minus 20 degrees. The wings are connected by a steel-and-glass bridge with a south-facing wall that pivots entirely open. It’s twenty-five feet long and counterbalanced overhead—the first time we’ve done that at this scale—by a large steel weight that sits five feet above the roof. The hand-wheel crank that operates it is attached to an eight-foot-long screw.

ROOF HOUSE | LOOKLEN ARCHITECTS
KHET YAN NAWA, THAILAND
This little home is called ‘The Roof House’ and it is located in Lat Phrao’s area. It is an extension of the old house that is located nearby. The land has a square shape at a size of 16x16 meters; surrounded by residential houses along its three dimensions. Whereas the front area has a small quiet alley passing by. An owner initiated an idea to build the house that serves several activities and increase usage functions of the old house that he had lived in for more than 15 years. Moreover, the Roof House performs as a common area that gathers a variety of family members’ activities; for example, being relaxing area, guest area, piano lesson area for Saturday and Sunday activities and playground for the dog.

SANCTUARY HOUSE | FELDMAN ARCHITECTURE
PALO ALTO, UNITED STATES
The clients of The Sanctuary, recent empty-nesters planning ahead to retirement, hoped to downsize and simplify in the design of their new Palo Alto home. When the clients purchased the property, an old wooden fence across the front yard and the original house closed off the site from the street. Behind this rough and aged presentation, however, was an urban refuge of lush vegetation throughout the deep lot. This sense of discovery served as the original inspiration for the design of the house and directed both architect and client to its culmination. The house is sited quietly behind the large heritage oak tree with its canopy stretching across the generously sized front yard. After passing under its branches, guests are lead through a series of courtyards and view gardens that weave through the undulating footprint of the building. Each interior space is paired with its own landscape moment, allowing the architecture and landscape to flow into each other.

The residence with just over 200m² of single-storey house offers translated spaces for children and their leisure and study activities and planned environments with priority in family activities. The exterior porch due to its elevation relative to the terrain appears as a porch above the pine forest. If the house on one side is born from the land, on the other due to the natural topography delicately levitates on it. This solution appears in a way as a strategy of environmental comfort, the Sintra mountain range has a very high humidity level, with this solution decreases the transfer of moisture from the soil to the house. The program is simple and was thought to the place where it is, with the existing climate. In this way is intended the greater absorption of sunlight: Rooms facing south, an office that appears as a place of collective activities and open for passage, room to the west and kitchen to the north. The large glazed windows allow the entrance of natural light in much of the day and therefore the heating of the space.

OCEANIQUE VILLAS | MM ARCHITECTS
MUI NE, VIETNAM
The site has a trapezoidal shape 110 meters deep between the ocean and the road and 42 meters along the beach. The sea front view is amazing and unusual for a private residential project in this area, usually occupied exclusively by resorts and hotels. The idea was to maximize this potential with semi-detached sea front villas and keep a large part of the land as a “buffer” landscaped area to prevent noise from the road. The construction is composed of 3 units: Two 3 bedrooms villas, and one 4 bedrooms villa, each with a private 10mX3m swimming pool. The construction was raised to 1.8 meter from the beach level in order to keep a good privacy from the public beach, maximize the sea view and prevent from site erosion.

EDITH FARNSWORTH HOUSE | LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE
PLANO, UNITED STATES
The Farnsworth House, built between 1945 and 1951 for Dr. Edith Farnsworth as a weekend retreat, is a platonic perfection of order gently placed in spontaneous nature in Plano, Illinois. Just right outside of Chicago in a 10-acre secluded wooded site with the Fox River to the south, the glass pavilion takes full advantage of relating to its natural surroundings, achieving Mies' concept of a strong relationship between the house and nature. The single-story house consists of eight I-shaped steel columns that support the roof and floor frameworks, and therefore are both structural and expressive. In between these columns are floor-to-ceiling windows around the entire house, opening up the rooms to the woods around it.

SAKURA HOUSE | ESTUDIO PKA
BELEN DE ESCOBAR, ARGENTINA
Surrounded by the Argentine Delta, implanted in a trapezoidal lot, overlooking a lagoon; Its north orientation, towards one of its sides, generated the inclusion of a light patio with abundant vegetation, which we also use as the entrance. It works as an articulator; as a transition between the street and the access to the house, it is the heart of it and all the circulations turn towards this space. The west-facing façade has a sliding gate that is hidden when it opens, with the intention of generating a stenographic sensation towards pedestrian access through a path that changes its forms. The idea is to go through different sensations: first, we can appreciate the music room, with different instruments used by the family, which also eventually opens onto a multipurpose space, generating flexibility of environments. We continue walking and we find the central patio with abundant vegetation and the entrance door that is hierarchized with a wooden paneling that manages to make it go unnoticed.

KHET BANG KHO LAEM, THAILAND
The owner of this project is Mr.Krit, he is a newscaster with playfulness. He has told us that he wants a good looking modern house that could respond to his lifestyle, privacy, peace, and safe. He not only wants his own space that he could have a small party with his friends but also the house has to design consistent with feng shui for this house. Form feng shui, Mr.krit bedroom has to be the front side of the house only (Close to the public road) can be seen from the outside which will lose privacy also to secure the side of the party deck the outsiders or can access to the house. We have design steel battens to solve both of the problems that have characteristics the depth of the battens unequal. The idea of design will make the battens deeper and stronger came from the notion that the side of the road needs security and privacy on the other side the battens will be smaller to not obscure the perspective from inside of the house. This modern house would look calm from the black box shape and also make them look more fun and playful from the black unequal steel battens which are the inspiration from the personality and needs Mr.Krit the owner of the house.

RIVER HOUSE | ALEXIS DORNIER
PEREREANAN, BALI
The river house is a five-bedroom residential home located in Pererenan, Bali. Private spaces are grouped into a cubistic volume that seemingly hovers above the living rooms and the garden of the premises. An expansive pool forms a strong vector into the adjacent rice field - a graphic juxtaposition to the first floor’s horizontal configuration. The continuation of Bali’s beautiful landscape into the Inside of the building is one of our key credos in architectural design-for the river house we embedded the existing topography and used it as the over-arching feature for a three-dimensional experience. Different passages, walkways, and spaces lead through the house. We used reclaimed timber and locally sourced sandstone to create surfaces and textures that evoke a sense of timelessness, firmness, and reference back to Bali’s vernacular building culture.

The inner courtyard at the center of the house, connected all spaces, grants the owner to connect with green views all day long. SKYSCAPE ROOFTOP | WARCHITECT
BANGKOK, THAILAND
The project’s owner runs a 5-story apartment. In the past, the rooftop was only used to keep water tanks, leaving a lot of empty space. The owner, therefore, wished to build a small house there for his own use. The rooftop location is an interestingly unique context that sets this project apart from other housing designs. Instead of a normal ground, this house has a concrete courtyard. Trees are replaced with vertical lines of tall buildings in the Lat Phrao district. The 0.00 ground level is elevated to the level of over 15.00 meters. In addition, this house would have only the front façade and could not be seen from the side and the back. To avoid creating a stark contrast between this house and the apartment below, our team designed this house so that no one could see it from public roads.

MA HOUSE | CADAVAL AND MORALES
TEPOZTLAN, MEXICO
The commission of the house comes together with the explicit petition to use stone as the main construction material. The decision doesn't respond necessarily to esthetic reasons but more likely to its common existence in the place, its little need for maintenance and its low cost for built square meter. Such premises are taken as a project challenge both in a structural, typological and esthetic way. The project for the MA house responds to the search of a bright, wide and comfortable space built through a material that, at first, is hard and uncomfortable: the stone. With the presence of two major mountains on both sides of the plot, and two neighbors in the opposite direction, the house is a basic volumetric exercise: open the views and the main spaces to the mountains, and neglect the openings to the sides; and the definition of a central and open patio, a crack that defines the access of the house. However, this house doesn't behave as a standard patio-house: typically, those are built through a central space around which all the relations and circulations take place; the MA house, meanwhile, develops all the circulations at its outer perimeter.

House H is a reinforced concrete structure composed of a succession of longitudinal and transverse beams that work together to generate a single structural piece. As always, we prefer to inhabit a structure instead of structuring a room. In this way, we consider the technical feasibility of a project as its actual design resolution; feasibility is not separate from project design. This means that before becoming a house, the project is its own structure. The L shape of the house turns its back to the disadvantages of the lot (a ramp to a public parking on one side and an existing residential buildings) and embraces the large open public garden on the west. The L shape also creates a tribute to the curved road of the square where the house sits. The house's fence is made of architectural concrete and black metal (recalling the house materials) and follows the street's curve until a break was done to emphasize the entrance to the house. Above the fence, the first floor of the house hovers on the flourishing green of the garden. At the entrance the visitor is welcomed by a ramp, which creates a continuous and quiet walk into the house through the front enclosed front yard, giving the time to the visitor to enter and adjust to the peaceful oasis of the garden. The garden planning is an integral part of the house concept.

The mountain retreat is a small structure set within a high country station occupying 1,300 hectares on the south facing shores of Lake Wakatipu, Central Otago. This region of New Zealand is also known as the Southern Lakes. It is an alpine environment formed by heavily glaciated schist mountainscapes and vegetated below the snow line with beech forest. Early European occupation of the region began in 1840 with explorers seeking to extend pastoral activities established in the gentler environments to the north and east of the Southern Alps. This occupation was intensified by the discovery of the Central Otago goldfields in the early 1860's. Both forms of occupation constructed structures for shelter and utility with the stackable weathered schist readily available around the rivers and glaciated mountain slopes.

DALLAS, UNITED STATES
Heavy cast-concrete walls extend from the interior of the house out into the landscape, breaking the “modern box” and creating courtyards that allow for a bright, nature-filled view from every room. This effect is complemented by the huge glass walls that define each space. A large, floating, pavilion roof hovers over both the interior and exterior rooms, defining a special “living precinct” in the site and further fragmenting the boundary between interior and exterior. The roof shape and large cantilevered overhangs were carefully configured to provide complete shading from the harsh Dallas sun at all times of day. An “Impluvium” or opening in the center of the roof is modeled on those found in traditional Roman houses and allows rainwater and light to reach the garden below. Flowing water plays a large part in the design as well. Beginning at the entry, a narrow channel courses through the site and to the pool beyond. The stream is punctuated by a series of cascading terraces and a gentle waterfall near the main entry. At night, lighting within the water casts changing patterns on the adjacent textured concrete surfaces.

SAN BERNARDINO, UNITED STATES
The design uses a series of thickened walls which run east-west along the topography of the dramatic mountain site to establish discrete programmatic zones and protect the interiors from the sun. Each resulting zone affirms its connection to the surrounding hillside, extending to outdoor living areas and into the landscape beyond, while the thickened walls demarcate successively more private areas of the house. The main residence features a three-car garage, three bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a fluid living, dining, and kitchen space with sliding glass doors opening onto the pool to the east and the valley sunset to the west and anchored by an indoor-outdoor fireplace.

TUCSON MOUNTAIN RETREAT | DUST
TUCSON, UNITED STATES
The Tucson Mountain Retreat is located within the Sonoran Desert; an extremely lush, exposed, arid expanse of land that emits a sense of stillness and permanency, and holds mysteries of magical proportions. The home is carefully sited in response to the adjacent arroyos, rock out-croppings, ancient cacti, animal migration paths, air movement, sun exposure and views. Great effort was invested to minimize the physical impact of the home in such a fragile environment, while at the same time attempting to create a place that would serve as a backdrop to life and strengthen the sacred connections to the awe-inspiring mystical landscape.

FALLING WATER | FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT
MILL RUN, UNITED STATES
Wright's admiration for Japanese architecture was important in his inspiration for this house, along with most of his work. Just like in Japanese architecture, Wright wanted to create harmony between man and nature, and his integration of the house with the waterfall was successful in doing so. The house was meant to compliment its site while still competing with the drama of the falls and their endless sounds of crashing water. The power of the falls is always felt, not visually but through sound, as the breaking water could constantly be heard throughout the entire house. Wright revolved the design of the house around the fireplace, the hearth of the home which he considered to be the gathering place for the family. Here a rock cuts into the fireplace, physically bringing in the waterfall into the house. He also brings notice to this concept by dramatically extending the chimney upwards to make it the highest point on the exterior of the house.

BUTTERFLY HOUSE | FELDMAN ARCHITECTURE
CARMEL, UNITED STATES
The clients approached Feldman Architecture to design a retreat for eventual retirement and visits from their grown children – a retreat befitting the natural beauty of the location in the Santa Lucia Preserve, a 20,000 acre private development and land trust near Carmel, California. The clients were meticulous in the selection of the site, searching for two years for a spectacular piece of land which was flat enough to accommodate living on one level. In an initial meeting with Feldman Architecture, the clients noted their vision of butterflies alighting on the meadow site which the architects took as inspiration. They also expressed a desire to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces with a simple, modern aesthetic and to provide separate spaces for the growing family.

CHAMELEON VILLA | WORD OF MOUTH ARCHITECTURE
KEDIRI, INDONESIA
“Chameleon Villa” located in Buwit, a village in the lush interiors of the southwest coastal area of Bali. Constructed on an acre of land, overlooking a dense forest and a gentle river below, the villa sits on a steep contour with an 11-meter difference of level between the arrival area and the river that runs the western length of the property. Given such a spectacular location, the challenge was to create an architecture that truly connected with its surroundings and that integrated well with the topography of the site. The buildings are situated on different levels of the land and they follow the contour lines in a way to take in the vantage points towards the river below and the forest across. The rotation of the volumes on the land follow these criteria and allows the creation of in - between spaces and gardens to enjoy which would otherwise be difficult to experience on a land of such a steep pitch.

WYNDHAM GARDEN | MIA DESIGN STUDIO
PHU QUOC, VIETNAM
The land area has no view to the seaside. From that disadvantage of Wyndham Garden Phu Quoc, we decided to design garden villas with large courtyard inside as Vietnamese traditional houses. While designing the master plan, we planned the villas close to each other as the traditional villages in Vietnam. With image of bamboo pathways, the traffic roads inside project have been designed in small size and winding shape as countryside alley in Vietnam to help people feel acquainted. Each group of 5 or 7 villas creates a small hamlet with separated paths and shared yard. Meanwhile, each villa still retains an absolute private, quiet and romantic space in unique architecture. We remain the privacy to the villas with three-meter walls and maximize the opening to nature by putting no door inside each of them. Inside every villa, the furniture is also made of rustic materials which are friendly to nature. Along with the one-storey structure, Wyndham Garden Phu Quoc provides not only an absolute private relaxation space but also view to the sky and nature.

SILVER SUMMIT | IMBUE DESIGN
PARK CITY, UNITED STATES
In the Rocky Mountains of North America near Park City, Utah the views are as world-class as its skiing. The natural landscape is beautifully rugged and harsh with a climate to match. While it supplies limitless vistas and recreation, the mountain offers very little in terms of flat terrain or shelter from severe winter conditions. Like the gambrel oak trees that blanket the site, anything living on the mountain has to be hearty and willing to work with the land.

CHIANG RAI RESIDENCE | ARCHITECTS 49
WIANG CHAI, THAILAND
A49HD’s tropical style was our basic foundation. This was simple and familiar. We then proceeded to twist the core of the house to achieve a new design that fits into the natural environment, such as slopes and trees, surrounding it. The house was to be a multi-family residence, therefore, careful thought was given to the movement and circulation of the residents. Living quarters for each family were clearly separated, while still maintaining convenient contact with one another. In this way, we achieved a sense of a familiar environment within the new design.
