For over four decades, Timbo has walked the length of Sierra Leone’s most challenging corridors, not with the swagger of power, but with the quiet resolve of a former classroom teacher who refused to stop fixing things. From negotiating Sierra Leone’s first collective bargaining agreement for teachers to drafting the laws that created the Industrial Court and NASSIT, from risking his life to restore democracy to launching the Free Quality School Education program, Timbo has consistently chosen impact over titles, though titles have rightly found him.
He is a Fourah Bay College-trained historian, lawyer, and educator. A former Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) who transformed it into a national force. The first African ever elected to the Executive Board of Education International (EI). A substitute member of the ILO Governing Body in Geneva. A two-time Minister of Labour and a former Minister of Education. A democracy activist who said no to three military juntas. A peacemaker who helped negotiate the Lomé Peace Accord. A football administrator who led Mighty Blackpool FC. And today, the Presidential Adviser on Job Creation in the Office of the President.
But above all, Alpha Osman Timbo is a husband, father of four, and a proud son of the Fullah and Themne people, who believes that the measure of any leader is not how long they stay in power, but how many systems they leave behind that outlast them.
