Frequently Asked Questions

What is spirituality?

Since this is a term that means many different things to different people, I thought I'd include my own personal definition to help you determine whether my services would be a good match for you.

Spirituality is...

  • Being in touch with a wider view of the universe and our place in it.
  • Feeling connected to something greater than ourselves—whether we call it God, the natural world, or a higher consciousness.
  • Feeling drawn to live life in line with our own core beliefs and values.
  • Looking at the broader picture at every stage of life. How does what I am experiencing reflect a broader experience of humankind, across time and culture? And how does my own personal growth impact that broader experience?

Is a belief in a higher power necessary in order to benefit from spiritual direction?

No. Spiritual direction can be a pragmatic assessment of how one's life choices matches one's values. It can be a commitment to increasing moments of contemplation or peace within oneself. It can be a wish to take a "big picture" view of your life and how to make it more meaningful. It can be a desire to find ways to form deeper connections with others. These things can be of equal value regardless of a person's beliefs or lack thereof.
