The Jhelum is the source of life and livelihood for the local residents of Kashmir. Inspired by the devastating floods in Kashmir, the song 'Jhelumas' talks about the tremendous perseverance of the Kashmiri woman. Her courage and resilience are as constant and ever flowing as the river Jhelum itself.

For centuries, Sufism, the inner mystical dimension of Islam, has enraptured its followers while fascinating non-believers. It effortlessly combines the meditative calmness of pure devotion with the ecstatic passion of soul-stirring music.

In the current political climate of India, many artists have taken to their art form as an outlet to express their opinions, views, and frustrations. One such artist is Mohammad Muneem Nazir and his band, Alif. They are an Indian band with sounds of Indie, Sufism and Contemporary music, and lyrics in of Kashmiri and Urdu tounges. This is apt as Muneem himself is from Kashmir, born and raised there, he has witnessed, first-hand, the conflict, the tensions in the state and he hopes to revive the culture, and language of the valley through his music.

Released in 2018, Lalnawath is a dark one, with heavy, heart-hitting music starting it off and setting the mood. The song is about dying dreams and the struggle to keep them alive. It uses powerful music, visualization and lyricism to get its point across to the listeners and viewers. Due to the song being in Kashmiri, the original lyrics are a bit hard to find but, the English translations are provided by Alif in the music video.

The lyrics starts off with Muneem discovering the personal belongings of someone dear to him, their treasure. He goes on to call it a debt as he is burdened by it, it brings back the memory of the deceased person. He has trouble deciding what to let go and what to keep, it is a difficult decision for even the items that he will keep will be in the shadows. By this he means they will be stored somewhere in a dark place, rarely taken out, and eventually forgotten about. In the last line of the stanza leading to the chorus, he calls out to the person on the other side, asking them with pain in his voice as to where they are. This is accentuated in the music video as he is seen pouring dirt in an empty coffin.

Alif is a band full of knowledge, culture and most importantly courage. In the song, they are addressing the topic of death, which a lot of people even refuse to acknowledge, they not only speak about it but they wonderful portray the sorrow one experiences. They also used Kashmiri as their primary language, using scales usually found in Sufi music, with some exceptions. They also do not hesitate to acknowledge their roots, this is seen where during live shows Muneem takes a traditional Kashmiri shawl and wraps it around the mic, and he himself is dressed in traditional clothes of the valley.

Alif Allah (Jugni) (Punjabi:   - ), also known as Alif Allah Chambe Di Booti (Punjabi:     ) is a popular Punjabi Sufi song that was composed and sung by Arif Lohar and Meesha Shafi in Coke Studio Pakistan.[2][3] The lyrics of the song were based on the works of 17th century Sufi poet Sultan Bahu.It is an adaptation of Punjabi folk "Jugni" in a Sufi version.[citation needed]

Alif: In my journey as a singer, I owe my entire vocal prowess to the invaluable guidance of Celia Lobo, a distinguished opera singer from the 1970s. Her mentorship played a pivotal role in shaping my abilities and enabling me to unlock the full potential of my voice. Initially, I ventured into singing as a means to express the emotions behind my writing and compositions. Little did I know that this choice would set off a chain of events, leading me to where I am today.

Alif: The essence of any art form, be it music, cinema, or other creative expressions, lies in its ability to transport the audience from one state of being to another. However, it is important to recognise that the first recipient of this transformative experience is the artist themselves. Sometimes, artists succeed in achieving this connection, while other times they may fall short. This vulnerability inherent in being an artist is what makes it such a profound and humbling experience, emphasising the need for gratitude and humility.

Alif: Exciting news awaits as our song will be featured in the highly anticipated second season of Made in Heaven, and I am thrilled to be playing myself in the series. Additionally, I had the privilege of being part of a feature film called Band of Maharaja, directed by Mr. Girish Malik, which is currently in post-production. I eagerly await its release and the opportunity to share it with the audience.

Alif: Engaging in self-reflection, crafting scripts, and creating films are ways in which I dedicate time to myself. These activities not only allow me to express my creativity but also help me navigate and manage my anxieties and tendencies to overthink.
