• Alienware AW520H — biggest strength: Hi-Res certified drivers with a 20–40 kHz range plus Dolby Atmos spatial audio, all in a lightweight 11.84 oz frame with memory foam, breathable fabric earpads.
• Alienware AW520H — biggest trade-off: It's fully wired, and its headline features (Dolby Atmos, AI mic noise cancellation, mic mute LED and AlienFX lighting) only work over the USB connection.
• Razer BlackShark V3 — biggest strength: Three ways to connect (2.4 GHz HyperSpeed Wireless Gen-2, Bluetooth 5.3 and 3.5 mm), hybrid ANC, and up to 70 hours of battery.
• Razer BlackShark V3 — biggest trade-off: It's the heavier, bulkier option at 2.5 lb, and its frequency ceiling tops out at 28 kHz versus the Alienware's 40 kHz.
• Buy the Alienware AW520H if you game mostly at a desk on PC and want maximum comfort and audio detail for the money.
• Buy the Razer BlackShark V3 if you split your time between PS5, PC and mobile, and want wireless freedom with active noise cancellation.
The AW520H is a wired, over-ear headset aimed squarely at the desk-bound PC player. Its core pitch is audio detail: Hi-Res certified dynamic drivers with a frequency response that reaches 40 kHz, paired with Dolby Atmos spatial audio for positional accuracy. In practice, that combination is what you want if you play shooters or story-driven games where you're listening for footsteps, directional cues and layered soundscapes rather than just loud booms.
Comfort is clearly a design priority here. The earpads use memory foam under a breathable fabric cover, and the suspension headband slides while an inner strap adjusts tension — two separate fit controls rather than one. At 11.84 ounces, it's built to be worn for hours without the clamp-and-sweat problem that plagues heavier headsets. The retractable boom mic adds AI-driven noise cancellation that filters ambient sound and focuses on your voice, which is genuinely useful if you share a room or sit near a fan or AC unit.
So who should buy it? In my opinion, the AW520H fits the PC gamer who wants a comfortable, detailed wired headset and is happy to stay tethered to a USB port to unlock everything it offers. Skip it if you need wireless, console-first connectivity, or you want active noise cancellation that works independently of your connection type — those aren't what this headset is designed around.
Razer BlackShark V3: Who It's For
The BlackShark V3 Pro is Razer's wireless ANC esports headset, and its entire design reads as "never stop gaming, never get tethered." You get three connection modes — 2.4 GHz HyperSpeed Wireless Gen-2, Bluetooth 5.3, and 3.5 mm — and you can even mix 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth audio simultaneously across two devices. That's the standout feature for anyone who games on PS5 or PC while also taking calls or listening to something on their phone.
The audio hardware is substantial: 50 mm TriForce Bio-Cellulose Gen-2 dynamic drivers, tuned for clarity and positional performance. On PS5 you get the expanded Tempest 3D Audio soundstage, and on PC you get the upgraded THX Spatial Audio engine delivering 7.1.4 surround sound. Razer also ships pro-tuned, game-specific FPS EQ profiles that you can customize and save directly to the headset, so your settings travel with you.
For voice chat, the detachable HyperClear Full Band 12 mm mic uses a unidirectional pickup pattern to capture your voice while suppressing background noise — a larger capsule than you'd typically find, which is why Razer leans on "full band" here. And the hybrid active noise cancellation, combined with swiveling earcups and hybrid memory foam cushions forming a seal, is aimed at blocking out a noisy room entirely.
The trade-offs are real, though. It weighs 2.5 pounds — noticeably more than the Alienware — and its frequency response stops at 28 kHz, so it doesn't reach as high. Battery life is rated up to 70 hours, which is excellent, but it's still a battery you'll eventually charge. THX Spatial Audio is also Windows-only, so Mac users won't get that piece.
Side-by-Side: Which Should You Choose?
• Best for long-session comfort → Alienware AW520H. At 11.84 oz with breathable fabric memory foam pads and a dual-adjust suspension headband, it's built for hours of wear.
• Best for wireless freedom → Razer BlackShark V3. 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth 5.3 and 3.5 mm give you three ways to connect, plus simultaneous 2.4 GHz + Bluetooth mixing.
• Best for noise cancellation → Razer BlackShark V3. Hybrid ANC with swiveling earcups and sealing memory foam cushions is a dedicated noise-blocking system.
• Best for PC audio detail → Alienware AW520H. Hi-Res certified drivers reaching 40 kHz with Dolby Atmos is a strong wired-PC combination.
• Best for console and mobile gaming → Razer BlackShark V3. PS5 Tempest 3D Audio, plus Bluetooth for smartphones and handhelds, makes it the more versatile pick.
• Best for voice clarity → Razer BlackShark V3. The detachable 12 mm full band unidirectional mic is purpose-built for clear comms.
• Best for no-battery simplicity → Alienware AW520H. Wired-only means nothing to charge, ever.
• Best for cable-free long play sessions → Razer BlackShark V3. Up to 70 hours of battery keeps you untethered for days.
If I had to pick one, I'd buy the Razer BlackShark V3. The three-mode connectivity, hybrid ANC, 50 mm drivers, and up to 70-hour battery make it the more capable headset across more devices, and if you game on PS5 or move between platforms, that flexibility matters more than anything else on this list. I'd only steer you to the Alienware AW520H instead if you're a dedicated PC player who wants a lighter, wired headset with Hi-Res audio and Dolby Atmos, and who doesn't need ANC or wireless. That's a narrower but very real use case — and for it, the AW520H is the better fit.
Both are strong on PC. The AW520H gives you Hi-Res certified drivers and Dolby Atmos over USB, while the BlackShark V3 offers THX Spatial Audio 7.1.4 on Windows plus customizable EQ. For pure wired PC audio detail, I lean AW520H; for wireless PC flexibility, I lean BlackShark V3.
It has AI-driven noise cancellation on the microphone, not active noise cancellation for your ears. Its noise control is listed as active noise cancellation, but note that the AI mic cancellation and Dolby Atmos only work via the USB connection — not over a plain 3.5 mm jack.
Yes. It's designed with PS5 in mind, with Tempest 3D Audio support, and Bluetooth 5.3 covers smartphones, tablets and handheld gaming devices. You can even mix 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth audio from two devices at once.
The Alienware AW520H is the lighter option at 11.84 oz, with breathable fabric memory foam earpads and a sliding suspension headband with an adjustable inner strap. The BlackShark V3 weighs 2.5 lb but counters with swiveling earcups and hybrid memory foam cushions.
