In 2023 i was given the opportunity to draw a piece for the Trigger Off Zine, a zine project hosted by fellow World Trigger fans. Since the project is over and we can post full versions of our pieces, i thought it'd be fun to talk about thoughts / concept / the process
Most recent gachapon i got, it's a lil pouch
I had some trouble coming up with a concept, what would these two even do together? And then the idea came easily once i decided i'd let them experience what i enjoyed doing; getting gachapon. 90% of my life at the time was getting gachapon, i ended up with a huge bag of gacha capsules and now they're in every corner in my display cabinet. If you're curious, i'm no longer collecting them as frequently (i'm running out of space) but i do still love them and will get one or two here and there at times
I started off with a simple drawing of Jin and Amou. Jin i had drawn before but Amou not at all, he was surprisingly easy to draw. i think the hardest part was translating his side effect eyes into my more simplistic line-shaped eyes, but it worked out in the end
i also designed outfits that were pretty simple... but the alien planet symbol on their clothes is a reference to my signature! it's also fitting because of world trigger's story so that's pretty cool
it's too bad you can't see the front of Jin's hoodie, i think he looks good with one of those cool guy necklaces

Gacha gacha
The World Gacha! sign is directly inspired by the Gacha Gacha sign we have in Australia, it's always really eyecatching even from a distance (tho that might just be my interests showing) so it had to be prominent of course. The layout of the display cabinet with the token machine then gachapon machines also references the layout of a gachapon place i frequent in the city. Pretty sure i went to take reference photos when i was there too
I think one of the really fun parts about this piece was being able to get real life references. For example, the locations obviously. But i also happened to come across an empty gachapon machine, and when i wasn't sure about how the hand looked while holding a capsule, i went to grab one and drew referencing that
(The funny thing about the token machine is that token machines don't really exist in Japan (as far as i know) because in Japan you'd just put in 100-500 yen coins, but in Australia you have to exchange money for tokens (which i guess are the same size or shape as Japanese coins? i'm not sure how this works actually, it'd be cool to see a gachapon 'localisation' conversion). So i guess if you think too hard about it Jin and Amou are both in Australia for some reason)
For the gachapon machine labels i looked at some existing gachapon labels i had saved for the layout, then drawing the actual products itself turned into a game of 'how many jokes can i make'. The most notable thing with gachapon label design was usually there's one big enlarged design and then smaller ones, this is the most common but that doesn't mean a lineup of the different options isn't prevalent too
トリガー: this isn't a joke or anything actually, it's just all the triggers
LIAR VEGGIES: a reference to Mizukami, the liar broccoli of course. the rest of the items are vegetables but the most notable one is the very last one, i think it's a beansprout but it's also inspired by a cilantro drawing i did years ago that me and my friends joke about because of how absurdly not-cilantro it looks. it's quite famous, trust me
ぼんち!!: just different types of bonchi where the the secret toy is a bonchi cracker, based on food related gachapon that are just smaller keychain versions of existing products, there's a whole bunch of these and usually there's a miniature version of the food itself attached
IT'S TRIONLY A TRION CUBE: this is my favourite one, this references a joke from Drew Gooden's video where he talks about how his wife Amanda misread 'itonyamovie' as 'itonlyamovie'
as for the display cabinet, the lil manjuu versions of the two and Replica is based on the actual manjuu merch (though i don't think there's a Replica and Amou one)

As for the piece itself, i experimented with mixing both hard and soft rendering styles both because i was indecisive and i thought it'd be interesting. I'm really grateful for this drawing because some of the techniques i played around with and even the colours themselves i still love using in my art now. But i'm still a forgetful person so i also find myself often looking back on this piece to remember what i did, like it's a reference for my style or something. (That being said, colour-wise, i think i was also inspired by a drawing i did earlier in the year of my ocs.)
it also helped me realise that if you just keep drawing something then you'll end up with a thing - which sounds kind of dumb, if you create then you'll have created. But i was creating for something and it felt so satisfying to see it in its final form once it had been printed. Basically what i'm trying to say is i'm really happy that i did it. That even though i rarely draw scenes, i stepped outside of my comfort zone and created something i was proud of. And it was so much fun to combine two things i loved together!
as an end note, thank you to the trigger off team for organising this project ♥️
