My name is Zhiya Guo 郭志娅, and I go by Alice. I am an Assistant Professor of Management in the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University.
My research lies at the intersection of Teams, Leadership, and Hierarchy. Much of my work focuses on the everyday dynamics that shape whether people and teams work well together, such as:
How team members collaborate and manage disagreements
How people build relationships across formal and informal boundaries
How leaders and followers influence one another
My research has been published in leading management and applied psychology journals, including the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, and the Journal of Business Research. A symposium I co-chaired at the 2017 Academy of Management Annual Meeting also received the Best Symposium Award from the Organizational Behavior Division.
I received my Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management from Michigan State University, with a minor in Research Methods. I also hold a Master of Human Resources and Industrial Relations from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Human Resource Management from North China Electric Power University.
At Utah State, I teach Undergraduate Students as well as Full-Time and Part-Time Master of Human Resources (MHR) students. In the classroom, I enjoy helping students connect research-based insights with real organizational challenges. I also use experiential learning techniques to help students engage deeply with the course material and retain what they learn over time.
I received the Department of Management Teacher of the Year Award in 2026.
My courses include:
MGT 3710: Team Management
MGT 6320: Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness
MGT 6330: Applied Human Resources Research.
