Hey there. I'm Xemχia, a member of the ALGB News team, and a great resource on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Out of love for this franchise and the release of the new movies, I'd like to get more people into the series. I believe a good way to do this is to highlight some new releases.
If you don't know what Sonic The Hedgehog is, allow me to explain.
Sonic The Hedgehog is a video game franchise created by Sonic Team at Sega. It was originally created to overthrow Nintendo back in 1991. Since then, Sonic has been seen as a gaming icon, appearing in comics, shows, and most notably, movies.
Sonic Colors originally released in 2010 back on the Nintendo Wii. It was one of the best Sonic games, and was harled as the savior of Sonic. Fun 2D platforming, a ton of exploration, and good graphics made it as good as it was.
However, the game was trapped on the Wii, and with 480p, 30fps caps. So, in 2021, Sega released Sonic Colors Ultimate. 4K, 60fps, and some quality of life improvements.
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are some of the greatest Sonic games of all time. However, all versions of the game released were always just emulations of the original games (besides Sonic Jam).
In 2011, Christian Whitehead remastered Sonic CD. This version of Sonic CD got a proper release on Steam, iOS/Android, and PSN/XBLA. In 2013, Whitehead remastered Sonic 1 and 2, along with Simon Thomely. However, these remasters were trapped on iOS/Android. Meanwhile, Sonic 3&K was never released.
That changed when Sonic Origins released. The Retro Engine remasters of Sonic 1, 2, and CD were going to be released on 8th/9th gen consoles, and Sonic 3&K was going to be remastered just like the other three games.
In 2023, Sega announced Sonic Origins Plus, which would add Amy and 12 Game Gear games. This version of the game would also get a physical release, but it would also be DLC for people who already own the digital version.
It's been five years since the last mainline Sonic game. In 2022, that changed when Sonic Frontiers was released.
Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Dr. Eggman have ventured to the Starfall Islands. However, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Eggman are trapped in Cyber Space, and Sonic attempts to rescue them (excluding Eggman). First, Sonic must defeat Guardians for Portal Gears. Using those Gears, he can travel into Cyber Space and venture through stages from the past. After completing certain objectives, Sonic collects Vault Keys. After you get enough Vault Keys, you can obtain a Chaos Emerald. After all seven Chaos Emeralds are obtained, Sonic transforms into Super Sonic and battles a Titan. After the Titan is defeated, he moves on to the next island. During all of this, Sonic also obtains Memory Tokens to unlock cutscenes where Sonic talks with his friends.
Throughout 2023, three major updates were released. The list of additions is too large to fit here, so I'll leave a link to Frontiers' update history.
Sonic Superstars is a 2D Sonic game. I haven't played it, it looks boring.
