Alfasound was responsible for some of the most memorable radio jingles in the 80s and 90s, including Piccadilly, the very first jingle set for 96.4 Sound Wave in Swansea. It produced over 10 jingle packages for Radio Trent in Nottingham from 1980 until the station was taken over by GWR Group (later GCap) and re-branded as 96 Trent FM (Now Capital Midlands).

Alfasound also served smaller clients, such as short term stations. In April 1994 a modest package was recorded for Victory FM who became the full-time broadcasters to Greater Portsmouth 1999, with more jingles from Manchester.

Here's some really rare items from the 1980s. You can tell these are vintage items - they are all on cassette!

Originally bought around 1984, the three tapes are:

Alfasound generic radio and DJ ident jingles

Alfasound radio and DJ Sound effects

Dave Langer Creative Services 100 Non-custom jingles Vol 1

They are used - in the case of the Alfasound jingles, I used to use them all the time on the radio (although I did transfer the ones I wanted to use often to carts - remember them, folks?). The two Alfasound cassettes come with inlay cards giving full details, there's no details on the Dave Langer tape, although I'm fairly sure a sheet was sent separately with details (don't have that, sorry). Although Alfasound folded in the 1990s, Dave Langer is still going strong so he may have details that he can email you - the company still uses the same logo as on the tape!

These jingles are now exceptionally rare. I have loads of them on cassette from Alfasound and David Arnold music that will shortly be appearing on Ebay if there's a demand!

Besides The Bradshaws, its playlist and presenters, the one thing which had me hooked was its jingles. So much so I have scoured the internet for Piccadilly Radio jingles. It is my quest for the clips which has inspired this post.

As much as I like the Steve England and Alfasound jingles, my fondest and earliest memories were of the Sue Manning package. It coincided with me starting school and starting to take some sort of interest in popular music.

Audio production companies S2Blue and AudioSweets are moving to the old studios of once-popular jingle company Alfasound, in Ashton on Mersey near Manchester.

S2Blue has spent the last 12 years in Leek, Staffordshire but will move in January whilst continuing to create commercial production, jingles and music.

County Sound's first jingle package was written by Les Reed with help from Aiden Day. Les Reed was a big band leader in the 60's and 70's and also wrote many well known pop tunes including Delilah for Tom Jones and The last Waltz for Engelbert Humperdinck. He also wrote Man Of Action, RNI's theme music. We're not sure who sung the original County Sound jingles but some were re-sung very early on by the Swingle singers. We don't have the whole package at the moment. Please get in contact if you can help us track this down.

The second package is by Alfasound (with some help from Les Reed) and is based on the same tune. The music for these jingles was recorded at Manchester's Yellow 2 Studio as the Alfasound studios were only big enough to do the vocals at the time.

The next jingles were again based on The One and Only One for you tune but this time with US vocals. The music tracks were recorded in the Alfasound studios and then taken to the Strawberry Sound Studios in Dallas for the vocals. Steve England picked the singers (some were known at TM Century and Jam). This was before Alfasound became the UK agent for Jam.

Then there was package 5, The Only One package which is a resing of the Jam jingles for WNBC in New York. There were versions for the FM service during the day (County Sound Premier Radio) and resings for the evenings when all 3 County Sound stations (First Gold, Premier and Delta) all came together to share the same programmes. The jingles for Delta Radio during the day were resings of Leicester's Centre Radio package. The jingles for First Gold Radio's daytime programmes were resings of some of the old Pams jingles. There's an amusing end to the last of the long jingles!

I guess I can partly credit my interest in radio and then later in radio production to the jingles I used to hear coming out of my cheap AM radio as a 10 year old in Chichester for Radio Victory. (Tracked down via jinglemad.com)

Kenny Hague hosted the breakfast show on 'Sound FM' that morning in 1989. As you can hear here, the City is his, and he was well able to navigate the nicotine-coloured radio car live, accompanied by the other branded station cars, in a celebratory OB convoy. Enjoy too: the Alfasound jingles; Mark Hayman's Hague-hectoring; and my valedictory hyperbole.

After a couple more releases it was realised that the situation was "not as expected" and on leaving the label, other ideas of how to earn money from music began to form due to the experiences with the Records label. During down time, Jonathan practiced different styles of music to create a showreel for TV work and jingles. It was at this time also that Octagon Music Productions was formed. ff782bc1db
