I am a Reader (Associate Professor) in Natural Language Processing in the Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation (ILCC), School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh.
I am a leading member of the StatMT group and a member of the Edinburgh Natural Language Processing group.
I am co-founder and Chief Scientist of Aveni.ai - a leading fintech company delivering GenAI solutions to the UK finance sector.
My main area of research has been on multilingual natural language processing (NLP), but I am broadly interested in leveraging models of language to create compelling applications that improve people's lives.
My research has resulted in over 100 peer reviewed publications focusing on multilingual and multimodal NLP, and also covering topics such as ethics, explainability and efficiency. My research has had significant impact and has contributed to the paradigm shift towards neural networks and large language models. I have led a number of large EU research projects such as EuroLLM (an LLM for Europe), UTTER (a multilingual meeting assistant), and GoURMET (low-resource machine translation for media). In Aveni, I am currently leading the FinLLM project with partners Lloyds and Nationwide where we are training a large language model for the UK Financial Services Industry.
