Alexandroupoli, (Greece)
Alejandrópolis or Alexandroúpoli is a city belonging to Greece and capital of the administrative district of Hebros, in Western Thrace.
It has been suggested that the Alexandropolis site was the site of the ancient town of Tempira, 1 which had been founded by settlers from Samothrace.2
The history of the city dates back to the 19th century. For a long time it was simply a landing place for fishermen on the island of Samothrace, right in front of the city. The importance in the area was not the current one, there were other larger and more important towns, such as Suflí.
A small settlement developed during the construction of the railway line connecting Constantinople with the main cities of Greek Macedonia. The project was part of the effort to modernize the Ottoman Empire, and was assigned to engineers belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The settlement soon became a fishing village, which also used its Turkish name Dedeagatch.
