Alejandro Estrada Moreno has dedicated his professional career to research and teaching, covering both theoretical and practical aspects within academic and research environments. Since July 2023, he has been serving as a Tenure-Eligible Lecturer in the Department of Computer Engineering and Mathematics at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) in Tarragona. He earned his Ph.D. from URV in 2016, graduating with the honorary distinction Summa Cum Laude, supported by the Martí Franquès Predoctoral Scholarship. His doctoral research focused on Discrete and Combinatorial Mathematics, aligned with the research activities of the Discrete Mathematics group, to which he currently belongs.
Following his pre-doctoral period, Alejandro secured a postdoctoral fellowship at the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3) of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), where he worked from March 2017 to January 2019. He was a researcher within the Internet Computing & Systems Optimization (ICSO) group, which focuses on industrial analytics (including algorithms and software solutions) to assist with complex decision-making in areas such as transportation, logistics, production, real-time positioning, smart cities, and finance. During this time, he applied mathematical computational tools to solve practical problems, contributing to research, development, and innovation across nine research projects since 2017.
From February 2019 to June 2023, Alejandro was a full-time visiting professor, continuing his research in Discrete Mathematics and operations research. His work has led to numerous publications, including 41 peer-reviewed articles, of which 29 are indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), 9 in Scopus, and 3 in non-indexed journals. He has also served as a reviewer for over two dozen journal and conference articles.
In the early years of his career (2006-2012), after completing his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and later a master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Havana, Alejandro worked as an interim and associate researcher at the Cuban Meteorological Institute. There, he engaged in R&D activities related to Numerical Mathematics, Mathematical Optimization Models, and Numerical Weather Prediction.
With over a decade of teaching experience, Alejandro has been a continuous faculty member at URV since the 2014-2015 academic year. He has also served as a part-time visiting professor at the Euncet Business School (affiliated with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia) from 2018 to 2019, and at the Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas in Cuba during his earlier professional years (2007-2012).
His contributions in teaching and research have earned him several academic ranks, including the Accreditation for Research (Associate Professor) and Tenure-Eligible Lecturer (Profesor Lector in Spanish) from the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU), as well as the Accreditation for Associate Professor and Assistant Professor (Profesor Contratado Doctor, Profesor de Universidad Privada, Profesor Ayudante Doctor) from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation of Spain (ANECA).
