Over the past decade, there has been increasing recognition of the need to address adverse ecological and socioeconomic effects of abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG). There is extremely limited understanding of the life cycle and end-of-life management of fishing gear, trends in the magnitude of ALDFG entering oceans, and the effectiveness of interventions to avoid, minimize and remediate the production and adverse effects of derelict gear (GESAMP, 2021, Sea-based Sources of Marine Litter).
In light of the adverse effects of ALDFG, and the gap in knowledge of rates and magnitudes of derelict gear production, the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) recommended that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) expand work to fill this priority knowledge gaps. The FAO Fishing Technology and Operations Team (NFIFO) has developed standardized forms for fisher surveys to collect information on the causes and rates of production of ALDFG and established a centralized portal for ALDFG fisher survey data. This FAO ALDFG fisher survey programme enables the accumulated ALDFG data to be pooled so that broad, regional- and global-level analyses can be conducted, such as on gear-specific causes, rates and raised magnitudes of production of ALDFG.
It is crucial to have explicit permission from required authorities from any nation before collecting answers from fishers. As well is essential to know the sample size (how many is needed to ask) before starting. To estimate the sample size required and use it when assessing the total ALDFG from each fishery. We ask relevant authorities to fill out what we call "Pre-ALDFG survey questions" and are simply the number of vessels using each type of fishing gear as categorised in ISSCFG. The number of vessels or fishers can be estimated if there are no available registered numbers.
The system's administration must register the user to enter data into the global database. We need an email for use as the login name. When we register any person with a given email, an automatic email is sent to that email address for the user to generate a password to use. The automated email will be sent from the email address odysseus@ilfiammifero.it.
We need to connect each user to an institute name or an organisation. If more than one person is working together, it is crucial to be consistent with the spelling of the workplace. Please remember that we will deliver the data collected by filtering out from the database using the institute/organisation name. However, we can connect data with a selected list of institutes/organisations. Using different terms of institutes/organisations for a group of interviewers can be an opportunity for large countries to split data into regions or fisheries.
If you or your group of interviewers have done training and all prework needed for the survey, you can enter login names and institutes/organisations into this simple form. It is only a request for registration to the data portal.
We will register all involved if all conditions are met.
