Federico Smeacetto is a Full Professor of Materials Science and Technology at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He received an MSc in Chemistry from the University of Torino and a PhD in Materials Science and Technology from Politecnico di Torino, Italy. Following his doctorate, he was a researcher at Imperial College, London, UK; the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, UK; and AGH-UST, Krakow, PL. He leads a research group of 8+ tenure-track postdoctoral researchers and PhDs; he is a member of the Ph.D. Board. School of Materials Science and Technology and chair (2013-present) of the “Advanced glass and glass-ceramics: fundamentals and applications” course.
His research interests currently focus on developing engineering solutions for the design, development, and characterization of functional glass and ceramics as joining and coating materials for hydrogen conversion, with an integration perspective and a focus on recycling strategies. Author and co-author of >130 scientific papers. Principal investigator of EU-funded projects and contracts mainly related to hydrogen technologies (GriNHy, NewSOC, HyP3D, 24_7 ZEN, Solstice, Ecolefins, H2Shift, H2START, DESIREE).
Member of the Engineering Ceramics Division of The American Ceramic Society since 2004. Chair-elect of the Engineering Ceramics Division (2025-2026) and Program Chair of the GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION OF THE 50TH ICACC, 2026. Awarded the prestigious ACerS Global Ambassador and elevated to ACerS Fellow in October 2025.
