Frequently Asked Questions
How do we ensure products get into Gaza?
UNICEF and Red Crescent Egypt will be the recipients of the humanitarian aid shipments and will ensure the supplies get to the Rafah border crossing.
Due to the wide scope of the UN mandate, and UN work on the ground in Gaza via UNRWA, WHO, and UNICEF, UN organizations, as well as Red Cross/Red Crescent societies have primary access to the border crossing during the times it opens.
Why UNICEF?
Thomas Lukaszuk, former deputy premier in Alberta, is in touch with the Canadian embassy in Cairo, Egypt, along with UNICEF and Red Crescent Egypt (partner of Red Cross).
Thomas Lukaszuk has partnered with UNICEF previously in a similar initiative collecting supplies for Ukraine.
Wouldn’t it be better to send monetary donations?
Monetary donations can be made to the Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies, but donations can not be directed specifically to Gaza, or any other region. The Red Cross determines where the need is the greatest. Our shipment is targeted specifically for children in Gaza.
Further, the economic infrastructure in Gaza is badly damaged. Monetary donations will only go so far if there are no supplies to purchase.
We are, however, accepting monetary donations to cover the cost of shipment.
Who is this initiative for?
This is a non-partisan humanitarian initiative for the children of Gaza, who make up fifty percent of the population of Gaza, who are disproportionately affected by war, occupation, and displacement, as per the United Nations.
Why is this important?
Tragically, this war disproportionately affects children, as the median age in Gaza is eighteen years old. Forty percent of the population of Gaza is under fourteen years old.
To date, 15,000 civilians have been killed in this conflict, with at least 6,000 of those being children.
