Enhancing Physics Education and Teaching in Alberta
We are the Alberta section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. Our aim is to provide effective professional development workshops and sessions for the high school Physics and Science 20 and 30 teachers of Alberta as well as at the post-secondary level.
We hold an all-day teachers' workshop in the late Fall and 2 to 3 free evening sessions each year. Our members are high school science teachers and university/college professors with a deep interest in physics and physics education.
We meet as a group for the PD sessions and the executive meets on an irregular basis. There is no membership fee, just come to our PD sessions. For more information please contact us at the email address below.

Pizza and Physics Night 5:00 PMWednesdayFebruary 26 2025 CCIS L1-047 University of Alberta
All Physics 20 and 30 and Science 20 and 30 teachers are invited to an evening of Physics and Pizza at the University of Alberta on Wednesday February 26, 2025.
The evening will be focused on pedagogy and hands-on activities to help students understand electric fields. The evening will conclude with an engineering design challenge that uses the same concepts as a velocity selector! If your students have a tough time with electric field shapes and directions, which formula to use when, what voltage is (an it isn't energy!) then this is the evening for you. The activities are based on a Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics resource: Fields.
Time: Starting at 5 pm, pizza around 6:15, finished when you say you are done.
Pizza: $10 (cash or e-transfer)
Physics Teachers' Workshop
Preparing for the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology
9:00 AM Friday Dec 13, 2024
In Person : CCIS L1-047
University of Alberta
Or via ZOOM (AM Only)
Join us for our annual Physics Teachers' Workshop on Friday December 13 at 9:00AM (MST) . Our morning presenters include Dr. Michael Woodside. professor of physics at the University of Alberta whose research involves protein and RNA folding and disease misfolding. Dr. Woodside will be presenting on his research and the application of biophysics to his work. We continue with a tour of his labs. After lunch at the University Club (formerly the Faculty Club) , we will have a topical workshop with Dr. Damian Pope and Laura Pankratz on the new Perimeter Institute teaching resource on Quantum Physics. We conclude the day by joining the Dept. of Physics Colloquium with Dr. Damian Pope, Perimeter Institute entitled "Welcome to your Quantum Future: The potential of Quantum Technologies".
In- person Registration deadline is Dec 9 at 11:00 AM (MST)
Zoom Registration deadline is Dec 11 at 23:00 PM (MST)
Please note Zoom schedule has not been finalized.
The in-person registration fee for this one-day workshop is $100 ($50 for students or retired teachers). Zoom registration is free.
