Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in a world where human civilization consists of four nations, named after the four classical elements: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. In each nation, certain people, known as "benders" (waterbenders, earthbenders, firebenders, and airbenders), have the ability to telekinetically manipulate and control the element corresponding to their nation, using gestures based on Chinese martial arts. The "Avatar" is the only individual with the ability to bend all four elements.
One hundred years before the start of the series, a twelve year old airbender named Aang learns that he is the new Avatar. Fearful of the heavy responsibilities of stopping an impending world war and with the impending separation from his mentor, Monk Gyatso, Aang flees from home on his flying bison, Appa. During a fierce storm, they crash into the ocean, and Aang's Avatar State freezes them in a state of suspended animation inside an iceberg.

Aang and Appa are awoken a hundred years later by two siblings of Southern Water Tribe origin, Katara and Sokka. Aang learns that the Fire Nation started a war a hundred years earlier, just after his disappearance. The Fire Nation's opening move in its campaign for global conquest was to launch a genocidal attack on the Air Nomads which drove Aang's entire race to extinction, thus making him "the last airbender" left alive. He realizes that he must fulfill his destiny of becoming a fully realized Avatar and return balance to the world by defeating the Fire Nation. Aang sets out to master the three unlearned elements: water, earth, and fire. With Katara and Sokka, Aang decides to head first to the North Pole to find a waterbending master.
The new images come after the streamer gave fans their first look at Gordon Cormier as Aang, the titular Avatar and last surviving airbender, as well as siblings Katara and Sokka of the Water Tribe, played respectively by Kiawentiio and Ian Ousley.
Removing "Avatar" from the title takes away Aang's main point as a character. He's a child who has been given this rare power whose job is to restore balance to the world, which is a tall demand out of anyone who was given abilities he never asked for. The upcoming series restoring "Avatar" to the title demonstrates that it understands the importance of the Avatar's role in The Last Airbender's universe, particularly in Aang's case, since he is also the last airbender.

In the Avatar universe some people are gifted with abilities to control an element depending on which ethnic group they're born in. The ability is inborn so if you're not gifted from birth you have just received the short end of the stick. Those who get the power are referred to as "benders" of their element. You can only control one element. Earthbenders control rocks and minerals, and in one special case metals. Firebenders control fire and in more advanced stages, lightning, while waterbenders control water in all its physical states and bodily fluids, and can have low level healing powers. Lastly, airbenders control air. Only the Avatar can learn to control all four elements.
The original animated adventure series concluded with a widely lauded two-hour television movie in 2008, which we regard to be one of the best series finales of all time. Netflix added all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender to its library in May of last year, while The Legend of Korra arrived on the platform for US subscribers in August.
Netflix also has a live-action adaptation of ATLA in the works, however, original series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko departed the project last June, citing creative differences as the reason for their exit.
