Eligibility & Conditions to Apply

Applicants to the Asia Kakehashi program must meet the following requirements:

AFS Japan manages all aspects of the program, including identifying volunteer host families and dorms for student placement, providing intercultural training and supporting students as they adjust to living in a new country. Students are selected based on academic achievement, interest in Japanese language and culture, as well as potential to be future leaders of positive change in their own communities.


  1. Between the age 15 and 18 years; born after April 2, 2004 and before April 1, 2007

  2. Highly motivated, high-achieving students

  3. Mentally and physically fitness (will be assessed at the interview)

  4. Should have excellent academic records

  5. Learners of Japanese (School or Privet)

  6. Sri Lankans only

  7. Should not have spent more than 4 months continuously in Japan


Conditions for Application

1. Duly filled online application should be submitted with the required supporting documents as mentioned below.

  • Attachment No. 1: Upload your (size 4.5cm x 3.5cm) color portrait (which has been taken within the last 06 months) here. We only accept image files (.img/ .jpg/ .png)

  • Attachment No. 2: Upload your (i) Birth certificate, (ii) O/L result sheet (if not, Term test score sheet), (iii) Essay form, (iv) Dietary restrictions form here. We only accept all in one PDF file.

  • Attachment No. 3: Upload up to 10 best sports achievements in the last 05 years here. We only accept all in one PDF file.

  • Attachment No. 4: Upload up to 10 aesthetic achievements in the last 5 years here. We only accept all in one PDF file.

  • Attachment No. 5: Upload the testimony form by the Club/s or Association/s in charge teacher/s here. Your testimony should be signed and stamped by the Principal of your school. We only accept all in one PDF File.

  • Attachment No. 6: Upload the scanned copies of your Passport bio page and visa stamped pages here. We only accept all in one PDF File.

2. Students who have not sat for the O/L examination should submit a copy of the most recent term test results (Student Progress report copy) with the application.

3. Attachments should be saved by the name of the applicant and the Attachment Number mentioned on the Online application (Ex: ABC Vithanage No.01, ABC Vithanage No.02…etc.).

4. All information submitted with the online application must be true and accurate. Any false information may lead to immediate cancellation of the candidature of this program.

5. Applications that are submitted after the deadline will be disregarded without prior notice.

6. Applicant should be a student who is currently studying in grade 10, 11 or 12 (first year).

7. By the time of the scholarship, applicant’s age should be between 15 ~ 18>> 15+ / 18-. (Scholar’s birthday should be between April 2nd, 2004 and April 1st, 2007.)

8. Applicant should be a Japanese learner by the time of application.

9. Those who have fulfilled adequate qualifications only will be shortlisted for the interview. Selection or deselection of the first Round will be informed via email within one month of the application submission deadline.

10. The qualified candidates for the Academic year 2022/23 program will be rewarded a totally free scholarship to Japan. All expenses incurred in Japan (orientation, transport and travelling, insurance, food and lodging, school fee) will be borne by the Japanese government. Cost for dental care, flu vaccination and any personal need that is not relevant for the program should be borne by the candidate him/herself.

11. Authority for servicing the project is solely possessed by AFS intercultural Programs, Japan and its partner/ non-partner organizations.

12. For any student who fails to participate in this particular scholarship after the selection due to medical reasons or sudden death, the opportunity will be awarded to the next best candidate. If any scholar chooses not to take part in the program due to personal reasons, all costs incurred should be reimbursed to the AFS Intercultural Programs, Japan.

13. Selected candidates will be required to complete a 14- 21 days boarding orientation at a SISLO- provided facility under the supervision of SISLO staff and professionals.

14. Selected applicant shall be willing to eat any given food including all meat, fish, eggs, diary before the departure and during the scholarship period in Japan (Medical reasons are accepted).

15. Scholars are not allowed to drink alcohol, smoking and/ or all kinds of drugs or hitch hiking during their scholarship period.

16. Scholars should attend school in Japan, should participate to all school activities and extra-curricular activities assigned on a daily basis during the scholarship period. Any failure to fulfill these duties will lead to disciplinary actions against the scholar.

17. Scholars should be willing to represent Sri Lanka, to perform and promote culturally valued activities during their scholarship period.

18. Students who breach the conditions mentioned in these clauses or the common law practiced in Japan will be expelled from Japan with immediate effect and are liable to pay the cost incurred for their scholarship to AFS Intercultural Programs, Japan.

19. Applicants who have agreed to the Applicant’s Declaration of the online application will only be able to proceed with the submission.

20. Conditions for Application are subject to change without prior notice in order to maintain smooth functioning of the application process and procedures.

21. Panel of Judges’ decision is final and will not be subject to any changes requested or demanded by any applicant or associated person, throughout the application process and thereafter.

22. Any canvassing shall be subjected to immediate cancellation of the candidature of the applicant.
