Tohoku, located in the north of the main island of Japan, is known for its beautiful nature, hot springs, festivals, and delicious food. Local communities in Tohoku try to pass down their variety of traditional dishes, customs, and artworks to the next generations. Many of them are little known, and some issues are significantly related to a well-known aging population and depopulation in prefectures. With funding from the Akita Prefecture in August 2023, the Akita International University started a Digital Archives to promote Akita culture. This website has over 100 categories; every page provides its historical background, characteristics, short movies, and access information. We have started to expand these archives to the Tohoku area and are eager to share the voices of the local artisans, farmers, workers, women and people who live in the Tohoku area. We sincerely hope that you will take a greater interest in Tohoku!
