If you want a professional-grade, wired studio headset designed for critical listening and long sessions with children who need to focus on audio accuracy, choose AKG Pro Audio K371; if you need lightweight, wireless open-ear earbuds that keep kids aware of their surroundings while gaming or moving around, choose Monster AC317.
• AKG Pro Audio K371: Offers studio-grade neutrality and superior isolation in a closed-back design but requires a wired connection and lacks the portability of true wireless freedom. Best for the child or student who needs deep focus on music, gaming, or schoolwork without distractions.
• Monster AC317: Delivers true wireless convenience with 24-hour battery life and situational awareness via an open-ear design but sacrifices the sound isolation needed for quiet study or late-night gaming. Best for the active child who values safety and movement over absolute audio precision.
The AKG Pro Audio K371 is built for people who treat audio as a serious craft or a deep immersion experience. This isn't just another pair of headphones; it is a piece of professional equipment designed to reproduce sound exactly as the artist intended. The key here is the frequency response, which spans from 5 Hz to 40 kHz. That range captures everything from the deepest rumble of a bass drum to the highest shimmer of a cymbal, making it ideal for anyone who wants to hear every detail in a track or game.
For children, this means a level of clarity that standard consumer gear simply cannot match. If your kid is into gaming, these headphones provide the spatial awareness needed to pinpoint where sounds are coming from in a virtual environment. If they are learning music or podcasting, the neutral sound signature ensures they aren't being misled by artificial bass boosts or treble spikes. The closed-back design is crucial here; it offers superior isolation, blocking out the noise of a busy household so the listener can stay locked into their world.

However, this product demands a specific lifestyle. Because it relies on a wired connection with a mini-XLR cable, there is no Bluetooth freedom. You have to manage cables, which can be a hassle for a restless child. The weight is also a factor; at 255 grams, they are substantial enough to feel secure on the head but heavy enough that some users might notice them during extremely long sessions. They are not for the kid who constantly takes headphones off and puts them back on. These are for the dedicated listener who puts them on and stays put for an hour or more. The plush ear pads and ergonomic fit help, but the trade-off is clear: you get professional audio quality at the cost of wireless mobility.
The Monster AC317 flips the script entirely by prioritizing freedom and safety over total isolation. This is an open-ear headphone system, meaning the drivers do not seal against the ear canal. Instead, they sit outside the ear, allowing ambient sound to pass through naturally. For parents concerned about their children playing outdoors or moving around the house, this is a massive advantage. Kids can hear the doorbell, a sibling calling them, or traffic if they are outside, all while enjoying their favorite tunes.
The wireless capability powered by Bluetooth 5.4 technology is the standout feature here. There are no tangled cords to catch on playground equipment or trip over during play. The battery life is equally impressive, offering up to 24 hours of playback when combined with the charging case. A single charge gives seven hours, which is plenty for a full day of school or a weekend of gaming. The inclusion of AI noise reduction for calls is also a practical feature for older children who might use the device for video chats or online classes, ensuring their voice comes through clearly even in noisy environments.
Comfort is engineered into the very shape of these buds. The ergonomic hook design ensures they stay secure during vigorous activity without digging into the ear. The touch controls allow for easy volume adjustments and call management without needing to fumble with a phone. However, the open-ear design comes with a significant sonic trade-off. Because there is no seal, low-frequency bass is less impactful, and external noises will bleed into the listening experience. If your child is trying to block out a loud television or a noisy sibling to focus on a game, this model will not work. It is strictly for those who value situational awareness and comfort above all else.

I would buy the AKG Pro Audio K371 for my own children if I were looking for the best gaming headset for children who need to focus deeply on their entertainment. The sheer fidelity of the sound and the ability to isolate noise makes it a superior tool for immersive experiences. While the cables are a minor inconvenience, the audio quality is unmatched. However, if my priority was keeping my kids safe while they move around or wanted the best in ear headphones for children that don't require constant supervision for cable management, I would switch to the Monster AC317. Ultimately, for a stationary, high-quality experience, the AKG wins, but for active, safe listening, the Monster is the smarter choice.

Not directly; the AKG Pro Audio K371 is a wired model that connects via a mini-XLR to 3.5mm cable. To use it wirelessly, you would need an additional Bluetooth transmitter connected to the audio source, whereas the Monster AC317 has built-in Bluetooth 5.4 for direct pairing.
