If you want professional studio monitoring with a wired connection for precise audio reproduction, choose AKG K72; if you need bone conduction-style open-ear wireless freedom for basketball and high-intensity workouts, choose NEOQOQO A50. These two devices live in completely different worlds, serving distinct purposes that rarely overlap. One is a tool for the mixing console and the rehearsal room, while the other is an accessory designed to stay on your head while you sprint down the court. I have analyzed the specifications and design intent of both to help you decide which one fits your specific lifestyle, whether that involves tracking a mix or chasing a ball.
• AKG K72: Delivers reference-monitor accuracy with 40mm drivers and closed-back isolation, but requires a wired connection and offers zero battery life since it is passive.
• NEOQOQO A50: Offers 48 hours of wireless playtime with Bluetooth 6.0 and an IPX5 rating for sweat resistance, but lacks the deep bass extension and isolation of a closed-back studio design.
• Best For: The AKG K72 is for producers and musicians who need accurate sound reproduction in a controlled environment. The NEOQOQO A50 is for athletes and commuters who prioritize movement, comfort, and battery life above all else.
The AKG K72 is built for the person who treats audio as a craft. This is not a headphone designed to be worn while you are running drills or dribbling through traffic. It is a closed-back, over-ear studio headphone engineered for professionals and serious enthusiasts who need to hear every nuance in a recording. The core of its appeal lies in the 40mm professional drivers that provide a frequency response ranging from 16 Hz to 20 kHz. That extended low-frequency response is crucial because it gives definition to kick drums and bass guitars, allowing you to hear details that cheaper headphones simply miss. If you are mixing background harmonies or tracking a hook, this level of precision is what separates a good mix from a great one.
Comfort is a major selling point here, even though the build feels substantial. The self-adjusting headband ensures a perfect fit without requiring manual tightening, and the lightweight construction allows for hours of wear during long sessions. Whether you are in a live stage setting or a quiet recording studio, the closed-back design maximizes isolation. This means you can focus entirely on the audio without hearing the ambient noise of the room, and the room noise cannot bleed out into your microphone. The earpads are replaceable, which is a smart design choice to protect your investment over time, as these are often the first components to show wear after years of use.

However, this device comes with significant limitations that rule it out for active users. It is strictly wired, featuring a single-sided non-detachable 1/8" TRS cable that is 9.8 feet long. While the length provides plenty of slack around a studio desk, it makes any kind of physical activity impossible. You cannot take these to the gym, nor can you run outside with them. Furthermore, the lack of wireless connectivity means you are tethered to your playback device. If you are looking for the best true wireless earbuds for basketball, this product will frustrate you immediately. It is a stationary tool, not a mobile companion.
The NEOQOQO A50 is designed for the person who refuses to be tethered by wires. This is an open-ear clip-on headphone that prioritizes situational awareness and physical freedom. Weighing only 5.3 grams per earbud, it feels almost weightless on the head. The soft silicone material and ergonomic design ensure a non-slip fit that accommodates various ear shapes, making it an ideal choice for outdoor sports enthusiasts who need gear that stays put during intense movement. Unlike the closed-back AKG, the A50 uses an open-ear design that lets you hear the world around you while listening to your music. This is essential for safety when running on roads or playing team sports like basketball where you need to hear teammates and referees.
Battery life is where this device truly shines compared to wired alternatives. With Bluetooth 6.0 technology, it offers continuous use for up to 8 hours on a single charge, and the included charging case extends that total playtime to 48 hours. This "energy-locking technology" means you do not need to worry about finding an outlet before every practice session. Even better, a quick 5-minute fast charge can get you back in the game if you forget to charge it overnight. The IPX5 waterproof and dustproof rating adds another layer of reliability, ensuring that rain or heavy gym sweat will not damage the electronics. You can ride in the rain or sweat through a workout with confidence.
Despite these advantages, the A50 has trade-offs regarding audio fidelity. The open-ear design means there is no passive isolation; you will hear external noise, and others might hear your music. While the 11 mm dual-magnet high-sensitivity driver boosts vocal clarity and cuts external noise by 98% via ENC (Environmental Noise Cancellation) for calls, it cannot replicate the deep, immersive bass of a sealed studio headphone. The 3D Soundstage is impressive for its form factor, but it does not offer the flat, uncolored response required for critical audio production work. It is a fantastic companion for daily life and exercise, but it is not a monitor for the mixing board.
• Best for basketball and active sports → NEOQOQO A50: The wireless nature, secure clip-on fit, and sweat resistance make it the only viable option for high-movement activities.
• Best for studio monitoring and mixing → AKG K72: The 16 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response and closed-back isolation provide the accuracy needed for professional audio work.
• Best for battery life → NEOQOQO A50: With 48 hours of total playtime and fast charging, it eliminates the anxiety of dying mid-workout.
• Best for durability against elements → NEOQOQO A50: The IPX5 rating protects against sweat and rain, whereas the AKG K72 is not rated for moisture exposure.
• Best for call clarity → NEOQOQO A50: The ENC technology and dual-magnet drivers boost vocal clarity by 95%, ideal for phone conversations on the go.
• Best for isolation and privacy → AKG K72: The closed-back design keeps your music private and blocks out room noise, which the open-ear A50 cannot do.
• Best for long-term investment maintenance → AKG K72: Replaceable earpads extend the lifespan of the unit, whereas the A50 relies on the longevity of the internal battery.
• Best for multi-device switching → NEOQOQO A50: Multipoint connection allows seamless switching between phones, tablets, and PCs without re-pairing.
If I were buying headphones specifically for basketball, there is no debate. I would choose the NEOQOQO A50. The requirement for bone conduction headphones for basketball or the best with mic ear clip headphones for basketball demands a device that stays secure during sprints and handles sweat without failing. The AKG K72, while excellent for its intended purpose, is physically incapable of handling the rigors of a basketball game. Its wired connection and closed-back design would restrict movement and create a safety hazard on the court. However, if my goal was to produce music or analyze audio tracks, I would immediately switch to the AKG K72 for its unmatched frequency accuracy. But for the court, the NEOQOQO A50 is the clear winner.
The NEOQOQO A50 is rated IPX5 waterproof and dustproof, making it effective against rain and sweat. The AKG K72 is not rated for water resistance and should never be used in wet conditions.
No, the AKG K72 is strictly wired with a 3.5mm jack and does not support Bluetooth. You would need an adapter or a dedicated transmitter to use it wirelessly, which introduces latency issues for gaming.
The NEOQOQO A50 features ENC for calls to boost vocal clarity by 95%, making it superior for phone conversations. The AKG K72 offers a flatter, more accurate response for music production but lacks active noise cancellation for calls.
No, the package includes a 9.8-foot cable and a 1/4" screw-on adapter, so it works with most standard audio equipment right out of the box without needing additional purchases.
