If you want a wired, semi-open studio monitor for long mixing sessions and live monitoring, choose AKG 240; if you need a highly tunable hybrid in-ear with deep bass and a massive soundstage for critical listening at home or on the go, choose FiiO FH5s. This decision isn't about which is louder or cheaper, but about how each tool fits the specific workflow of an audiophile who demands precision and control over their audio experience.
• AKG K 240 MK II: Its biggest strength is the legendary semi-open design that delivers an airy, natural soundstage ideal for professional mixing, while its trade-off is the lack of isolation and the requirement for a dedicated amplifier to reach full potential due to its 55-ohm impedance. This pick is for the producer or audiophile who spends hours in a quiet room needing accurate frequency response.
• FiiO FH5s: Its biggest strength lies in its hybrid driver architecture and three-way tuning switches that let you customize the sound signature for any genre, offering a large soundstage in a compact in-ear form factor, though it requires careful fitment and a good source to drive the dynamic drivers effectively. This pick is for the listener who wants portability without sacrificing the ability to shape the sound to their exact preference.
The AKG K 240 MK II stands as a titan in the world of professional audio, not because it tries to be everything to everyone, but because it excels at being a reference tool. At its core, this headphone relies on a patented Varimotion 30 mm XXL transducer. This is not just marketing fluff; the sheer size of the diaphragm allows for a wide dynamic range and high sensitivity, which translates to a very detailed signal transfer. When you are an audiophile looking for the truth in a recording, this driver type is designed to give you exactly that. The semi-open technology is the defining feature here. Unlike closed-back headphones that trap sound and create a boxy feel, the semi-open design lets air move through the ear cups. This creates an "airy" quality to the highs and prevents the muffled sensation common in many consumer headphones. You get the bass response of a closed design but with the openness of a true open-back model.
Comfort is equally critical for anyone working in the studio or engaging in marathon listening sessions. The self-adjusting headband is a mechanical marvel that distributes weight evenly across the top of your head. Combined with the replaceable earpads, which come in both velvet and leatherette options, the K 240 MK II envelops the ears rather than clamping them. This design philosophy ensures that after two or three hours of critical listening, you won't feel the fatigue that often accompanies other over-ear models. The cable length of 3 meters (or the included 5-meter coiled option) provides significant freedom of movement, allowing you to walk around a studio or sit back comfortably without worrying about tripping over a short cord.

However, this headphone is not for everyone. The semi-open design means zero noise isolation. If you plan to use these in a busy coffee shop, on a subway, or in a noisy office, they will let in every background sound and leak your audio out to the people around you. Furthermore, the 55 Ohm impedance rating means that while they can work with some portable devices, they truly shine when paired with a dedicated headphone amplifier. Without sufficient power, you might find the bass lacks the punch and the dynamics feel compressed. This makes the AKG K 240 MK II a specialized tool. It is best suited for the audiophile who has a controlled listening environment, values accuracy over isolation, and is willing to invest in the necessary amplification gear to unlock its full potential. It is a standard in studios for over two decades because it helps professionals hear details others miss, but that same detail-oriented nature requires a specific setup to appreciate fully.
In stark contrast to the over-ear comfort of the AKG, the FiiO FH5s brings a different kind of sophistication to the table: extreme customization and hybrid driver technology. These are in-ear monitors designed for the audiophile who refuses to accept a "one-size-fits-all" sound signature. The acoustic design here is a complex marriage of a 12mm beryllium-plated diaphragm dynamic driver for low frequencies and a 6mm beryllium-plated dynamic mid-frequency driver, all working in concert with a Knowles TWFK-30017 balanced armature for the highs. This triad of drivers covers the entire spectrum from 10Hz to 40,000Hz, ensuring that you hear the deepest rumble of a kick drum and the most delicate shimmer of a cymbal with equal clarity. The use of beryllium plating on the diaphragms is significant; it adds rigidity where needed and flexibility where required, reducing distortion and allowing for smoother transitions between frequencies.
What sets the FH5s apart from almost any other in-ear monitor on the market is the trio of sound adjustment switches. These electronic crossover controls allow you to tweak the lows, mids, and treble independently, creating eight distinct sound signatures from a single pair of earphones. Whether you prefer a warmer, bass-heavy presentation for hip-hop or a more neutral, analytical sound for classical music, you can physically switch the configuration to match your mood or the genre. The semi-open design at the rear cavity is another clever engineering choice. By balancing the air pressure inside the ear canal, FiiO reduces the "plug-in" feeling that often causes discomfort during long sessions, resulting in a larger perceived soundstage despite the small physical footprint.
The build quality reflects this attention to detail. The TRISHELL "sandwich" structural design uses 5-axis CNC machined aluminum-magnesium alloy to minimize resonance and distortion. The result is a housing that feels solid and premium. The twist-lock swappable plug is a practical feature that supports 2.5mm, 3.5mm, and 4.4mm heads, giving you versatility whether you are connecting to a high-end DAP, a portable player, or a studio interface. However, this level of performance comes with its own set of requirements. In-ear monitors demand a proper seal to function correctly; if the fit is off, the bass response collapses entirely. Additionally, like the AKG, the FH5s benefits immensely from a high-quality source. While they have a manageable impedance, driving them with a weak device might not reveal the full extent of their dynamic range. This product is for the audiophile who wants a portable hi-res solution that doesn't compromise on sound-shaping capabilities. It is perfect for those who travel, commute, or simply want the flexibility to tune their music in real-time without needing multiple pairs of earphones.

After weighing the specifications and the intended use cases, I would personally buy the FiiO FH5s for my daily listening as an audiophile. While the AKG K 240 MK II is a magnificent piece of engineering for the studio, the flexibility offered by the FH5s is far more valuable in a modern, mobile lifestyle. The ability to change the sound signature with simple switches means I never have to compromise on how a track sounds, whether I am listening to heavy metal or jazz. The hybrid driver setup provides a depth and clarity that feels incredible, and the build quality suggests these will last for years. For someone who wants a single pair of headphones that can do it all—from critical listening at home to enjoying music on the train—the FiiO FH5s is the superior choice. It offers the best combination of performance, customization, and portability for the serious listener today.
They can produce solid bass due to the semi-open design and 30mm driver, but they lack the isolation and deep sub-bass impact of sealed in-ears like the FiiO FH5s, making them less ideal for bass-focused genres unless you are in a treated room.
Yes, the FH5s comes with a 3.5mm jack option via the twist-lock plug system, allowing direct connection to smartphones and laptops, though a DAC/amp may improve the sound quality significantly.
While they have a sensitivity of 104 dB SPL/V, the 55-ohm impedance means they perform best when driven by a dedicated amplifier rather than a standard phone jack to achieve their full dynamic range.
The ergonomic in-ear design and semi-open rear cavity are built to reduce air pressure and fit securely for long sessions, but individual ear anatomy varies, so trying different eartip sizes is recommended for a perfect seal.
