FTP uploads take a lot of time, proportional to the number of files, not just their size. A small site consists of 6,000+ files. Why wait when you can only upload a two files? Upload Kickstart and your backup archive and restore your site in less than a third of the time!

The first step is to download the latest release of Kickstart. It can be always retrieved by visiting It comes as a ZIP package. Do not try to install it in Joomla!, WordPress, Drupal etc. Instead you'll have to unzip it first. The extracted files are kickstart.php and a lot of .ini, .js and .pem files.

The second step is uploading those files to your server. Upload kickstart.php and any files you may need to the server path you want the restored site to be installed. If you want the site to be extracted to your domain's root (something like ) you'll have to locate your web root. On most servers it appears as a directory named public_html, httpdocs, htdocs, www or something similar when you connect to your account by FTP. If unsure, ask your host. They know which directory it is without having to guess.

If you are using Kickstart Professional you MUST rename kickstart.php to something that does not include the word "kickstart", e.g. wfklgjhwelkurgh.php. Kickstart will refuse to operate otherwise. This is a security precaution which cannot be circumvented.

Always, no matter what, use the Binary transfer mode to upload your backup archives by FTP. If you are using FileZilla you can do so by clicking on the Transfer menu, then the Transfer Type submenu and making sure that Binary is selected. If you do not do that, most FTP software will fall back to ASCII file transfers which will corrupt the backup archive and cause extraction issues.

If you need to review your backups, go to the Akeeba Backup by clicking on the COMPONENTS menu item near the top of the screen. Then click on Akeeba Backup. Here you can manage the backups that have been made with Akeeba. You can also create a backup from this point. You can use Akeeba Kickstart to restore a backup as per the instructions below.

i am using joomla 1.5 i have downloaded my website backup file (.jpa extension) using Akeeba now want to restore my site another PC.So i want kickstart for joomla 1.5.plz provide me suitable kickstart.

I tried editing the configuration.php file with the database info, but it does not help. Also, since I am trying to restore from backup, I have simply created a blank database and am trying to connect to it.

If so you can't unzip it - you'll need to download kickstart.php. Put that in the root where you want the backup to appear along with the backup. Then go to and that should get you through the installation process.

I have received a backup of a client's website as a .jpa file and I'm trying to install it locally into MAMP. The site is using Joomla! 3.6.5 Stable and Joomla Platform 13.1.0 Stable [ Curiosity ]

Next, using the FTP client, navigate to the location on your computer where you saved the .jpa and kickstart.php files. Upload both the .jpa and the kickstart.php file to the httpdocs folder. It's important to note that when you download the Kickstart.php file it comes in a .zip file with two other Java Script files. You should also upload these to your site as seen in the screenshot below.

Next, go to the front end of the site and run the Akeeba Kickstart.php to extract the files on the CloudAccess.net server. Because you've already uploaded the kickstart.php file to your site using FTP, simply browse to the file by typing in "/kickstart.php" at the end of your domain name.

Akeeba performs a wide range of functions, helping you update your Joomla site to the latest version, take regular security backups, move sites, and secure your Joomla site. We're only going to look at moving a site though. So head on over to AkeebaBackup.com, and download the Akeeba Backup extension! It's free, although you'll see a pro version that is packed with extra features, and goodies for your site.

We're ready to take a backup! Really quick note here, if you have sub-sites (sites in sub directories) or other file directories in your Joomla site that you do NOT want to move with your site, use the exclude directories option to easily make sure those aren't dragged along.

To take a backup, simply click on the Backup Now button, it will confirm that you want to backup, and give you the option to add a description, and just press Backup Now! You'll see Akeeba go through the process of backing up all your files, as well as the database, into one nice, neat compressed package for you. Do NOT navigate away from the page during this, otherwise the process will abort.

We're halfway done! Now we need to move our backup to our new location, whether it be in a new directory, or all the way in a new server. Access your Joomla site via ftp, and locate the backup you just created. Typically you'll find it in /administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup. It is usually in a .jpa format file, which is just a specific file extension used for these backups.

Almost there! The only thing that's left is installing. For this we're going to head back to AkeebaBackup.com for one more download. This time we're going to grab the Kickstart package, which is also free. This lets us unpack and install this site with ease. Once you download the Kickstart package, unzip it. You'll see several files in there. One will be the kickstart.php file, and there will be several other language files. I'm going to assume we're using English here, so all you need to upload to your new server is the kickstart.php and the en_GB.ini language file. If you're more comfortable with another language, feel free to use that instead! Make sure you upload them to the same location you put the backup file.

Now, in your browser, navigate to the location where you placed the Joomla backup file (i.e. yourdomain.com) and add /kickstart.php to the url to access the kickstart file. Walk through the very simple steps to unpack the Joomla site, and use Akeeba's easy installer to install your site!

Download the Akeeba Kickstart script from their official website and upload the kickstart ZIP file in the same folder where you have the .jpa archive. Once the ZIP file is uploaded, you will need to extract it using your FTP client. This will put multiple files in that directory similar to:

Once you have created the new MYSQL database and user name you need to upload quickstart.jpa and kickstart.php included in the quickstart folder included inside this quick start package.

The quickstart.jpa will install a new default installation of Joomla plus the Joomla template you have downloaded in our site. After you have installed the quickstart.jpa file you will have an exact copy of the template.

The quickstart.jpa file will extract all the files and data to the directory you upload it to. If you upload quickstart.jpa & kickstart.php to a sub directory it will extract all the files to the sub directory. If you upload them to the root public_html directory it will extract the files to the public_html directory.

The image shows a sample from the FileZilla FTP program. Have you followed the steps above, you can drag the file kickstart.php over and into the rootfolder www on your webhotel. Here, the backup file from Akeeba (with the file extension .jpa) must also be in order for Kickstart to boot. If you have not downloaded the file locally, find the JPA file below PluginsAkeebabackupcore-App-Backups-mittnavn.jpa.

Akeeba Backup for WordPress will automatically configure after a series of benchmarks on your server to determine the optimal backup settings for your site. This periods up to 5 minutes, depending on your server speed. Please do not navigate away from this page.

Step 5: Then click on the Backup Now button and sit back as the application is taking a backup of your site. This periods may take from 2 to 7 minutes, depending on your site size and server speed. Please do not browse to another page unless you see a completion or error message.

It allows you to download whole backup to your local computer or pendrive. Developer of this plugin suggest to download it using FTP client, because .jpa files are stored also on hosting in folder: wp-content/plugins/akeebabackupcore/app/backups/

Step 7: Users of the free (Core) version can only restore their backups manually using Akeeba Kickstart script (akeebabackup.com). It is a simple to use script which allows you to extract your archives directly onto the server, as well as recreate and configure the WordPress environment from the Akeeba backup JPA file. Kickstart is not an installer. It is only an archive extraction tool. You have to upload the kickstart.php and your language file (the INI files are translation files) and of course your archive to the target server.

Begin by creating a backup of your existing Joomla! installation with the Akeeba backup plugin. This plugin is an open-source backup component for the Joomla! CMS. It creates a site backup that can be restored on any Joomla!-capable server.

For quickstart install, simple is you just unzip quickstart paclage, you will see files .ini and .jpa, just upload all files to your website space and run install panel by access [yoursite]/kickstart.php

IMPORTANT:

Before we start, it's important to note, that the backup file, we'll be using later on, is from a Joomla! 3.2 Template.

Also: the backend login changes after installing the backup to this:

So after creating a new Joomla! installation and the coressponding Database, the next thing we need to do is extract the "kickstart.php"-file from the Akeeba Kickstart container. (Don't mind the other files, they are not necessary). e24fc04721
