Its 470 broadcasting centres cater to 99.19 per cent of the population and cover nearly 92 per cent of the country. The radio service is now used for storm warnings and crop cultivation techniques, dispelling rumours in conflict zones, assisting immunisation drives, and simply to provide entertainment. Its News Services Division broadcasts 647 bulletins daily for 56 hours in 90 languages/dialects in its Home, Regional, External, and DTH Services.

That journey ended on Wednesday, after the Union government ordered that the public broadcaster be exclusively referred to as Akashvani in all broadcasts and programmes -- consigning to history the British-era name that had become synonymous with radio in India.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has decided to enforce a provision of the law by which the radio vertical of Prasar Bharati will now be called only Akashvani. The following radio bulletin that people listen to on the government-run service will begin with the announcement, "This is Akashvani", instead of "This is All India Radio."

As per the media reports, the only state-run radio station in India will no longer be referred to as All India Radio and will instead go by the name "Akashvani." In accordance with the legislation, public broadcaster Prasar Bharti has chosen to stop using the term "All India Radio" to describe its radio station.

The 15 minutes program will be broadcast every Friday during 7- 9 PM slot on All India Radio network covering 25 FM stations, 4 FM Gold stations, 42 Vividh Bharati stations, and 159 primary channels/local radio stations in 23 languages, i.e., Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Santhali, Maithili, and Dogri.

All India Radio was referred to as 'Akashvani' by renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore in a poem he had written for the inauguration of the Calcutta shortwave service in 1939.
