Once your admin enables your organization, and your account, with multi-factor authentication (MFA) you have to set up your user account to use it.
Sign in to Microsoft 365 with multi-factor authentication
Before you can sign in to Microsoft 365 with Microsoft multi-factor authentication (MFA) (also known as 2-step verification), your admin needs to enable it for your organization, and then you need to set up your secondary authentication method. Once that's done, you're ready to sign in!
Sign in to Microsoft 365 with your work or school account name and password.
If you're using the text message method, for example, after you enter your password, you'll need to type in a verification code sent to your phone. Other secondary authentication methods have different ways to perform MFA, based on what you set up.
For the text message method, when you receive the the 6-digit code, type it in the box and then choose Sign in.

Set up your Microsoft 365 sign-in for multi-factor authentication
Once your admin enables your organization, and your account, with multi-factor authentication (MFA) you have to set up your user account to use it.
By setting up MFA, you add an extra layer of security to your Microsoft 365 account sign-in. For example, you first specify your password and, when prompted, you also type a dynamically generated verification code provided by an authenticator app or sent to your phone.
Sign in to Microsoft 365 with your work or school account with your password like you normally do. After you choose Sign in, you'll be prompted for more information.
Choose Next.
The default authentication method is to use the free Microsoft Authenticator app. If you have it installed on your mobile device, select Next and follow the prompts to add this account. If you don't have it installed there is a link provided to download it.
If you would rather use SMS messages sent to your phone instead, select I want to set up a different method. Microsoft 365 will ask for your mobile number, then send you an SMS message containing a 6-digit code to verify your device.
Once you complete the instructions to specify your additional verification method, the next time you sign in to Microsoft 365, you'll be prompted to provide the additional verification information or action, such as typing the verification code provided by your authenticator app or sent to you by text message.

Use Microsoft Authenticator with Microsoft 365
If your organization is using multi-factor authentication (MFA) for Microsoft 365, the easiest verification method to use is the Microsoft Authenticator smart phone app. It's just one click instead of typing in a 6-digit code. And if you travel, you won't incur roaming fees when you use it.

Open a browser and navigate to aka.ms/mfasetup
Sign in with your user name and password.
Select Next to proceed
Select I want to set up a different method to set up phone call as second factor authentication
Select Phone from the drop-down menu
Select Confirm to set choice
Enter the phone number you would like to use, select Text me a code as your authentication method and click Next
Microsoft MFA will send an authentication text code to the telephone number you have provided. Please check your mobile phone for the authentication text code. Enter the text code received into the textbox provided and select Next to proceed
You have successfully registered your phone number for authenticating using text message, select Next to finish the registration process
Congratulations, you have successfully set up MFA with text message
Change how you do additional verification
Depending on how your Microsoft 365 admin set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) for your organization, you might be able to change how you so your secondary verification.
Sign in to Microsoft 365 using your password and second verification method.

Choose how you want to do your second verification. Although all options are listed, your admin may not make them all available; you'll get a message if you choose an option your admin didn't enable.
When complete, click Save.
