Conference Rationale:

Discoveries made in the area of AI and Data Science spreads rapidly across borders to make a global impact. In the same way, investigating and solving problems in these areas should be approached with a global mindset. The conference brings together researchers and mathematicians working in the field of data science and AI particularly from those institutions where AI- and Data Science related departments and programs are recently established. Collaboration among those institutions, who recently established related research programs and have been actively involved in the area, would result in a synergistic effect by exchanging fresh ideas among researchers and exposing students and faculty to fresh perspectives and enable a broader scale of research initiatives.

AI & Data Science at Ajou University:

Ajou University recently created four global research programs in AI including Medical AI, Social AI, Autonomous Driving AI, and AI in Finance. Faculty members at the Ajou AI & Data Science Department are greatly involved in these global research programs and their research is fully supported by the government and various global enterprise companies such as Hyundai, LG, and Samsung. Within a 20-mile radius of Ajou University lies a multitude of startups, major IT companies and bank headquarters including Naver, Kakao Brain, Shinhan, KT, SK, CJ, Nexon, Hyundai, LG, and Samsung. Through collaboration with Ajou University, students and faculty from collaborative institutions would have access to research opportunities with major global companies around Pangyo Techno Valley, the Silicon Valley of Korea.

Department of AI & Data Science at Ajou University is one of the few data science departments established in Korea recently. The Department of AI & Data Science at Ajou University was incubated in 2017 as the Department of Data Science. Over the last two years, it has expanded and been re-established as the Department of AI & Data Science. The department currently has 15 faculty members and over 30 graduate students including both Ph.D. and Masters students. Research by faculty members of the department covers a great range of areas including Machine Learning, AI, Mathematics of Data Science, Statistical Analysis of Biomedical Sciences, Data Mining, Computer Vision, Text Analysis, Social Media Analysis, IoT, Mathematical Finance, Visualization, Medical Big Data, HCI, etc. Most faculty members are internationally recognized for their quality publications in the area of AI and Data Science. The department has great potential to lead the AI and Data Science research community in Korea.
