The Flight Experience in Winston-Salem offers a journey through the heart of North Carolina's "Piedmont" plateau, where industrial history meets modern academia. Characterized by undulating terrain and a skyline that rises suddenly out of dense deciduous forests, it is an ideal environment for VFR (Visual Flight Rules) navigation. You can use the distinct skyscrapers and the looming silhouette of Pilot Mountain to the north as your primary guides.
The airspace is governed by Smith Reynolds Airport (KINT), the city’s aviation heartbeat. Because there is no scheduled commercial traffic, the sky belongs largely to general aviation. However, you must remain vigilant of the Piedmont Triad International (KGSO) approach paths just 15 miles to the east, where heavy cargo and passenger jets descend into Greensboro, creating a busy corridor for smaller aircraft to navigate.
The "Camel" Skyline: The most striking feature is the downtown cluster, dominated by the Wells Fargo Center. Its rounded arches make it one of the most unique silhouettes in the American South. Nearby, the vertical fins of Winston Tower and the Reynolds Building (the architectural ancestor to the Empire State Building) create a dense urban core.
Wake Forest University: Just north of the CBD, the Wait Chapel spire acts as a perfect white needle against the red-brick campus. The university is a major visual waypoint when tracking toward the northern wilderness.
Old Salem Museums & Gardens: Directly south of the skyscrapers, you can spot the orderly grid of the historic Moravian settlement. The distinct red-tiled roofs, the Home Moravian Church, and the open greenery of God’s Acre cemetery provide a sharp contrast to the modern steel of downtown.
Truist Stadium: Home of the Winston-Salem Dash, this stadium sits on the western edge of downtown. Its bright field and stadium lighting make it a perfect "check-in" point when entering the city circuit from the west.
Pilot Mountain: Located roughly 20 miles north, this is the most famous natural landmark in the region. Its distinct "knob" (the Big Pinnacle) rises abruptly from the surrounding flats, serving as a natural beacon for pilots returning to Smith Reynolds.
For a classic North Carolina sortie, depart Smith Reynolds (KINT) and head directly south at 1,500ft to orbit the downtown core.
The Challenge: Perform a figure-eight around the Wells Fargo Center and Truist Stadium, then immediately track north-northwest toward Pilot Mountain. The goal is to maintain a steady altitude while transitioning from the urban photogrammetry of the city to the lush, rolling hills of the state park.
Once you reach Pilot Mountain, attempt a close (but safe) orbit of the Big Pinnacle to see the hikers modeled on the trails, then turn back toward the city to catch the sunset reflecting off the glass of the Winston-Salem skyline. It’s a short flight, but it perfectly captures the transition from "Industrial South" to "Appalachian Foothills."
