The Flight Experience Richmond offers a masterclass in industrial VFR navigation. Often skipped by pilots rushing toward the Golden Gate, Richmond is a hidden gem for those who appreciate the intersection of heavy industry and maritime history. Nestled on the eastern shores of the San Francisco Bay, its layout is defined not by a grid, but by the jagged lines of deep-water shipyards and the massive, sprawling footprint of the energy sector.
The airspace is uniquely squeezed. To the south, you have the busy arrival corridors for Oakland (KOAK), while the hills to the east force a narrow transit corridor over the water. Navigating Richmond requires a sharp eye for "vertical obstructions"—from the towering refinery stacks to the massive suspension towers of the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge.
The "Refinery Maze": The most striking feature from the air is the Chevron Richmond Refinery. In MSFS 2024, the photogrammetry captures every pipe, tank, and cooling tower with startling detail. From 2,000ft, the complex looks like a copper-and-steel circuit board carved into the coastline.
The "Ghost of Liberty": At the Port of Richmond, look for the SS Red Oak Victory. This handcrafted POI is a stark white-and-grey silhouette against the deep blue of the harbour. It serves as a tribute to the Rosie the Riveter era and is a perfect visual marker for your base leg.
The Bridge to the North: The Richmond–San Rafael Bridge provides a 5.5-mile-long structural spine across the Bay. The 2024 engine handles the double-decker cantilever design beautifully, and crossing it at 1,000ft offers a dramatic view of the currents swirling around the bridge piers.
The Ford Assembly Plant: Located on the southern tip of the city, this massive sawtooth-roofed building (now the Craneway Pavilion) is a primary visual reporting point. Its distinct architectural profile makes it easy to spot even in low-visibility "Bay Area Fog."
For a true test of your precision, depart Buchanan Field (KCCR) and track southwest over the Berkeley Hills. As you crest the ridge at 2,500ft, keep your eyes on the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge. Your challenge is to manage a steep, power-off descent over the Refinery Maze while maintaining clearance from the stacks.
The goal is to stabilize your airspeed and altitude so that you cross the SS Red Oak Victory at exactly 1,000ft, then bank hard west to follow the bridge's path toward San Rafael. It requires a keen eye for "industrial thermals" and the shifting winds that whip through the Carquinez Strait, which can easily shove a light GA aircraft off its heading!
