Rennes serves as the historic capital of Brittany and is a hidden gem for virtual aviators who appreciate the "Old World" charm of French architecture. Unlike the rigid grids of Barcelona, Rennes is a tapestry of narrow medieval corridors and expansive 18th-century squares.
For pilots, the experience is defined by the Vilaine River, which bisects the city and serves as a natural navigation lead-in. The city is surrounded by lush, rolling Breton countryside, providing a stark color contrast between the deep greens of the rural landscape and the slate-grey rooftops of the urban center. The approach into Saint-Jacques (LFRN) is iconic, taking you directly over the southwestern suburbs at low altitudes.
Parlement de Bretagne: The crown jewel of the city. In high-fidelity sim detail, you can see the intricate stone carvings and the grand courtyard of this 17th-century masterpiece.
The Half-Timbered Houses: Near the Saint-Pierre Cathedral, the "crooked" medieval houses are a stress test for photogrammetry. Look for the way the sim renders the irregular rooflines and timber frames.
Roazhon Park: Situated right on the riverbank, the home of Stade Rennais FC is a perfect VFR waypoint for lining up your final approach from the west.
The Modern "Les Horizons": These twin residential towers are among the tallest in the city. Their unique, scalloped architecture provides a great vertical reference point when flying low-level circuits.
Try a "Touch and Go" circuit at Rennes–Saint-Jacques (LFRN).
Take off from Runway 28, perform a climbing right-hand turn to 1,500ft to overfly the city center, and then navigate back using the river as your guide. The transition from the dense urban photogrammetry of the city back to the high-resolution ground textures of the airfield.
