I performed an AirMagnet Survey with our Fluke OptiView in an area of our facility specifically to see Microwave and Bluetooth interference. I had some very nice displays of the area showing the Interferer Power in the area surveyed.


I actually had 4 separate surveys and the same thing happened to all of them. I was able to display the Interferer Power on all 4 but now its gone. I ran another survey and the Interferer data is still there.


When I go into reports on each of my first 4 surveys and select the RF Spectrum Report I get a message that says "Please go to Display view and load a survey with spectrum data before running Spectrum report."

I'm looking for the very best enterprise wireless survey solution. Price isn't an issue. I just need something that does a good job inside and outdoors. If it's easy to use or cross platform that would be nice.

We recently had a 3rd party complete an AirMagnet site survey of a WLAN we've deployed. The wireless implementation is fairly straight forward; we have an 802.11G network with Cisco AP's controlled by a WLC. We provide two WLANs, one for corp devices and another for guests, each WLAN has its own SSID which is not broadcast. 


In summary the survey showed we had good coverage but had a fair bit of co-channel interference too.


I've since visited the site and as far as I can see I????????????m not seeing the co-channel interference they showed in the survey. To be fair I????????????m not using AirMagnet, rather I????????????m visiting each room in the building and checking how many AP's i can see in that location and which channel they are on using the wireless NIC client utility that came with the laptop (i know this isn't really best practice but its all i can do!!). In the vast majority of occasions I????????????m seeing 3 AP's all on different channels, although sometimes 4-5 AP's with the 4th and 5th at very low signal strengths. So it appears to me that the RRM on the WLC is doing its job well.


So my question for people who know something about AirMagnet site survey is... could the co-channel interference shown in the report simply be the 2nd WLAN being broadcast from each AP? Does AirMagnet show 2 AP's detected for one physical AP if you have 2 WLAN's setup? - and if so, could it see one as interfering with the other because it doesn't know they are physically the same device?

For a new site that can't actually have the RF surveyed I just use my brain these days. I put an AP every 30 meters (allow 15m 360 degree radius bubble for standard models like MR42 and MR33) to provide good coverage. Don't put them on the outside unless you want to do location tracking (wastes a lot of coverage outside of the building).

I recently had a site survey completed at my site. After taking a look at the survey results, I noticed that there was tons of channel interference on the 5 GHz radio every where. Interfer Severity almost 100%.

Well... was he passive survey done right after an install? You can look at the survey and see what AP's are affected and what channel. Then look at the AP on the co triller and current channel and see if the channel has changed. Then you can also issue a show AP auto-RF 802.11a which will show you the utilization for that AP. Survey is taken at that moment in time and RRM can change to help reduce RF overlap.

A couple of thing I should've noted is that one controller is running 7.0.220 and the other controller is running 7.2.110.0 when the surveys were completed. We are migrating over to an 8510 that is running 8.0.133.0. Will this make a difference in RRM (TPC/DCA)?
