SmartLynx Airlines, based in Latvia, was founded in 1992 as LatCharter Airlines. The airline initially provided package holidays from Riga and was well-equipped for sports, events, concerts, governmental, military, and executive charter flights.
In 2006, Loftleidir Icelandic, the aircraft lease arm of Icelandair Group, acquired a majority shareholding in LatCharter. The airline was rebranded as SmartLynx Airlines in 2008. Over the years, SmartLynx expanded its fleet and operations, focusing on ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) leasing and charter services.
In 2012, the management of SmartLynx acquired the company from Icelandair in a management buyout. The airline established subsidiaries, including SmartLynx Airlines Estonia and SmartLynx Airlines Malta, to serve various markets.
