Airborne Radar Market: Growth Trends, Drivers, and Outlook Through 2034
The global airborne radar market is entering a decisive growth phase as militaries and commercial aviation authorities race to modernize surveillance, detection, and tracking capabilities. Airborne radar systems, fitted on military aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, urban air mobility platforms, and aerostats, have become indispensable for defense readiness, air traffic management, and emerging civil applications. Rising geopolitical tensions, growing commercial air traffic, and rapid advances in radar electronics are together reshaping how nations invest in airborne sensing technology, positioning this market for sustained expansion over the next decade.
Market Size and Growth Trajectory
The global airborne radar market was valued at USD 14.1 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 15.14 billion in 2026 to USD 30.36 billion by 2034, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.10% over the forecast period, according to Fortune Business Insight. North America led the market with a 38.00% share in 2025, according to Fortune Business Insight, underscoring the region's dominant position in defense-driven radar procurement. The commercial and civil application segment is expected to command the largest share, at 62.90% in 2026, while the military aircraft platform segment is projected to hold the leading share of 38.94% in the same year, according to Fortune Business Insight.
Key Growth Drivers
Two forces are primarily fueling demand for next-generation airborne radar systems: escalating defense modernization and the expansion of commercial air traffic.
On the defense side, ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific, and the Middle East have pushed nations to prioritize air defense upgrades. Multinational initiatives such as NATO's Allied Future Surveillance and Control program and the European Sky Shield Initiative, which involves 24 countries, reflect multi-billion-dollar commitments to integrated radar networks. The emergence of hypersonic missiles and coordinated drone swarms has further accelerated demand for advanced detection systems capable of tracking fast, low-observable threats.
On the civil side, growing congestion in global airspace has renewed focus on air traffic control modernization. High-profile incidents, including the early-2025 Reagan National midair collision, have highlighted gaps in radar coverage and spurred infrastructure investment, including programs aimed at expanding surveillance coverage across more than 200 airports and transitioning air traffic networks to IP-based systems by 2028.
Technologically, Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar continues to solidify its dominance due to its multi-functionality and resilience. Complementary innovations, including artificial intelligence and machine learning integration for automated target recognition, the proliferation of Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductors for improved power efficiency, and continued miniaturization under SWaP-C (Size, Weight, Power, and Cost) optimization principles, are reshaping system design across both military and commercial platforms.
Market Restraints and Challenges
Despite strong growth prospects, the market faces notable headwinds. AESA radars are power-intensive, often consuming several kilowatts, which can significantly reduce the endurance of small unmanned aerial vehicles. Retrofitting legacy aircraft with modern AESA systems is both technically complex and costly, frequently requiring significant weight additions and specialized thermal management solutions.
Fleet-wide modernization programs also carry steep price tags, compounded by supply chain vulnerabilities such as GaN semiconductor shortages. Budget constraints in emerging economies further limit the pace of adoption, as many countries continue to rely on older radar infrastructure rather than investing in cutting-edge systems. Additionally, stringent regulatory requirements, including updated certification standards and cybersecurity mandates, are extending development and deployment timelines across both defense and commercial segments.
Emerging Opportunities
Looking ahead, quantum radar research represents one of the most promising frontiers for the industry. By leveraging quantum entanglement, these systems aim to detect stealth and hypersonic threats more effectively than conventional radar, offering resistance to jamming and improved tracking of low-observable targets. Substantial public and private investment is flowing into this area, with multiple nations and technology companies pursuing field-ready quantum sensing capabilities.
Beyond defense, the proliferation of UAVs across both military and commercial domains is creating demand for compact, high-precision, AI-integrated radar systems. Urban Air Mobility and eVTOL platforms, in particular, represent a growing civil application area, as sense-and-avoid radar becomes essential for safe operation in increasingly crowded low-altitude airspace.
Regional Outlook
North America remains the largest regional market, driven primarily by sustained U.S. Department of Defense spending and advanced fighter modernization programs. Asia-Pacific, meanwhile, is expected to post the fastest regional growth, propelled by rising defense budgets in countries such as India, Japan, and Australia, alongside efforts to counter regional security concerns. The Japan market alone is projected to reach USD 0.57 billion by 2026, while China and India are projected to reach USD 0.86 billion and USD 0.84 billion, respectively, in the same year, according to Fortune Business Insight.
Europe continues to invest steadily in collaborative next-generation fighter programs, including the Future Combat Air System and Tempest initiatives, while the Middle East maintains robust procurement activity aimed at countering regional security threats.
Competitive Landscape
The airborne radar market remains fragmented, with a mix of established defense giants and specialized technology providers shaping the competitive landscape. Leading players include RTX Corporation, Lockheed Martin Corporation, Thales Group, Northrop Grumman Corporation, and Saab AB, among others. These companies are concentrating efforts on advanced AESA radar development, GaN-based system upgrades, and early-stage quantum radar research, while pursuing strategic partnerships and acquisitions to strengthen their technological edge and expand production capacity.
Conclusion
The airborne radar market stands at the intersection of heightened defense modernization and expanding civil aviation needs. With a projected CAGR of 9.10% through 2034, the industry is set to benefit from sustained investment in AESA technology, AI-driven target recognition, and emerging quantum radar research. While cost pressures, supply chain constraints, and regulatory hurdles pose real challenges, the combination of enduring defense requirements and new commercial applications, from UAM to next-generation air traffic control, points to a resilient and expanding market over the coming decade.
