For students with bad knees, these patterns can be done standing or kneeling - we prefer kneeling.
Your attacker is directly in front of you. You bow, as a precaution your right hand remains on your sword.
As you bow, the attacker attempts to draw their sword to attack. You step out (RF) and cut across their eyes. Your front foot should land at the same time as the sword finishes the cut. The attacker stumbles back, you shuffle in and cut all the way down to the waist (Kyup).
Pull the sword back to your right shoulder, ready in case there are other attackers. When everything is clear, shake the blood from the blade and return it to the sheath.
There are two attackers, A in front and B behind.
Attacker A attempts to draw their sword. You block their draw with the handle of your sword and strike at their ribs at the same time (both hands on the hilt).
Attacker B then raises their sword to strike your head, you thrust to the throat of B as their sword reaches to top of their cut (sword blade horizontal).
Pull the sword out of B and strike A with a vertical cut all the way to the waist. (kyup).
Pull the sword back to your right shoulder, ready in case there are other attackers.
When everything is clear, shake the blood from the blade and return it to the sheath.
There are two attackers, A in front and B behind.
Attacker A attempts to grab your sword. Grab the handle of your sword with both hands. Step forwards with the left foot, release their grip as you twist to the right, pull out your sword and before A can attack, thrust to the throat of A (sword blade vertical and supported by your left hand).
Pull the sword out of A and strike B with a vertical cut all the way to the waist (kyup).
Pull the sword back to your right shoulder, ready in case there are other attackers.
When everything is clear, shake the blood from the blade and return it to the sheath as pivot 180 degrees back towards the front.
Demonstrate what you have learnt from the set techniques at 1st degree. You should also have some of your own techniques showing the use of the Danbong with small circles, angles and associated footwork/body movements that accompany good Danbong work.
Use the short stick (Danbong in Korean) as an extension to your own self defence. Using sensitive areas around forearm, shin, triceps, Achilles tendon, etc. Use powerful triangle. Practice these in a multiple grabbing situation.
Strikes to the body - thrust to solar plexus, collarbone, shins (when they kick you)
Against Grabs - single hand, cross hands, double hands, two hands onto one, double lapel, shoulder, hair, bear hug, headlock, punch, front kick, turning kick
These techniques are used to arrest someone who doesn't want to be arrested. These techniques are easier to apply if the person doesn't know they are going to be arrested, so try not to give any indication of what you want to do. The first thing they will probably want to do is punch you so the pain must come on immediately.
Because Hapkidoists are "best members of the society" when you release the person they should not be injured. However a distraction (kick to the shins) can give you the time you need to apply the technique. Your grip must be strong and yet ready to change if your opponent reacts badly.
At an advanced level you can try going from one arresting technique to another without losing them. The reason for this is that after a while, a joint becomes numb and you may need to change to maintain control (if the police station is far away). Also keep one hand free to open the door. For these examples you are attacking the opponent's left arm (usually their weakest one?).
Wrist lock - finger out. Attack from the rear. Grab the hand (RH thumb and forefinger) and the elbow (LH), and finish in a gooseneck lock (their fingers pointing away).
Wrist lock - fingers in. Attack from the rear. Grab the hand (palm up) and the elbow (LH), and finish in a gooseneck lock (their fingers towards you).
Shoulder lock - same arm. Attack from the front or side. Push your right arm through, left hand to the elbow and finish in a hammer lock.
Arm bar. Attack from the front or side. Grab their hand (LH), push your right hand through and across their chest. Apply arm bar.
Police elbow lock. Attack from the front or side. Grab their hand (LH), elbow strike to head (RH). Apply police elbow lock (Arm bar).
Corkscrew lock. Attack from the front or side. Grab their hand with both hand, spin under the arm and lock the wrist and forearm. Keep them on their toes.
Finger lock. Attack from the front, side or rear. Grab two or three fingers (the last three are the best), get them up on their toes and keep their punching hand (the other arm) away from you.
Six moves - done as a pair - one side then swap.
Legend: A = Attacker , D = Defender
Wrist > Head > Knee
A) Wrist Strike
D) Evade (to left), wrist strike (rear of pole), head strike, knee strike.
2. Upper block > Deflect > Head
A) Strike Head (straight down)
D) Double Upper Block, deflect pole to left, strike head (15 degrees right).
3. Mid Block > Throat > Head
A) Strike Waist (15 right)
D) Left Waist Block, thrust to throat, strike head with rear of pole (straight down), uppercut to groin.
4. Evade > Throat
A) Giant Swing to head (45 left)
D) Evade (back), thrust to throat
5. Low Block > Wrist
A) Deep low knee strike (left, cross over feet)
D) Low Block (lift front leg), step back and wrist strike.
6. Low Block > Throat > Strike Pole > Low spinning knee
A) Knee strike (right)
D) Lower Block (lift front leg), thrust to throat
A) Deflect thrust to the left
D) Strike pole then follow up with a low spinning knee strike
NOTE: This pattern contains linear components that require good foundation and power, at some points slow breath and control, not necessarily speed. Then there are faster circular movements designed to test dexterity and skillset of handling skills of the weapon which are to be done fast and with flow.
Bow in with weapon behind right shoulder.
R foot kicks base of pole upwards, up behind shoulder, down, then on up roll around R hand high right. Change hands L low strike, then R low strike.
Overhead spin as step 360 degree turn to L, L arm around neck and catch, R arm around neck to initiate 90 degree body turn towards L.
R side downwards strike, reverse hand L downwards strike, R side downwards strike. Upper block, fast spin 180 degree to R with lower block while lifting R Foot, reach out with a high horizontal strike to L head of attacker.
Defend attack to L shoulder with Vertical Block, thrust to neck and reverse hand overhead downstrike. Hands remain L on top, R foot forward in Stance.
Begin WuShu Flower forward spin x 6-8 spins. Finish grabbing weapon with L hand over R shoulder.
Small circle block R and thrust, small circle block L and thrust, finish with L hand single hand thrust. Drop weapon over shoulders as spin 440 degrees.
L hand upper reverse strike, this becomes the catalyst to commence rear double handed spins x 10-12. These must be done fast and with distinct generation of centrifugal force. Finish the spins with a R hand downwards strike.
Defend against attack to lower L leg with Low Block raising R foot, forward thrust, attacker blocks so step through with L leg and remove attackers weapon with L overhand strike followed by overhead spin and low kneeling low leg strike. Pause at this point.
Slowly raise the weapon to Horizontal position with breath control, weapon rotates clockwise over hand until is vertical and in contact with floor.
Slowly stand stepping backwards with L foot and setting up in ready stance position.
L reverse upper strike, L twist kick, R overhand head strike, R crescent kick to initiate a L 90 degree turn.
Clockwise spin in front, 1st rotation behind back being standard spin behind back. 2nd and 3rd Spins behind back being High hand change behind neck. Finish 3 rd one with L hand behind L shoulder leading into R Downstrike R foot forward stance.
Overhead spin leading to R side low strike with cross foot stance. Pause at this point. Slowly position rear foot for Backroll and execute finishing low kneeling stance R arm weapon to R side. Pause.
Use vigorous R wrist twist to spin weapon above head, nothing moves, just L hand reaches up to catch, then slowly re-set R ready stance while remaining down on L knee.
Jumping R front snap kick which leads directly into single hand forward spins alternating sides. Similar to a fireworks display, weapon speed of spins starts with precision and control but crescendos into maximum forward spin speed.
When ready, change direction of spin using R armpit, switch back downstrike, overhead spin to L side then immediate same to R side.
Without any reduction in cadence, R hand spins around neck, grab behind back, three way quick change of direction and finish with high impact jumping downstrike into floor and loud finishing Kyup.
These techniques are to be executed at the moment of, or just before contact is made. The attack is a two-handed lapel grab. Don't attack from across the room - just one or two steps before the attacker makes contact. Make sure you understand the footwork and how to absorb and redirect the attacker's energy.
Example techniques: Neck and Chin Throw, Hip Throw, Fireman's Throw.
For 2nd Degree focus on:
proper leverage
correct hand positions when you grab your attackers
keeping your balance throughout the entire technique
maintaining a good posture.
