It combines essential GIS theory with practical, hands-on training from the ground up using the free and powerful QGIS software. By the end of this course, you'll be equipped to confidently produce your own study area or thematic maps to support your research projects.

Course Outline:

Module 1: Basic Concepts of GIS

What is GIS?
Importance and Applications of GIS in Agricultural fields
Spatial and Non-spatial data
Raster and Vector data
Overview of Georeferencing, Digitization, Coordinate systems, Elements of a map

Module 2: GIS Interface and Basic Tools

Overview of QGIS software
Layer management (adding/removing layers)
Navigation tools (zoom, pan, identify, measure, select)
Coordinate systems and projections

Module 3: Georeferencing and Digitization

Steps to georeference an image
Assigning Ground Control Points (GCPs)
Transformation methods (Affine, Polynomial, etc.)
Saving and exporting the georeferenced raster
Creating new vector layers (point, line, polygon)
On-screen digitizing using georeferenced maps
Editing and saving vector data

Module 4: Attribute Table and Data Management

Understanding attribute tables
Adding and editing attribute fields
Joining and linking external data (CSV, Excel)
Field calculator (creating new fields, calculating values)
Query and selection (attribute and spatial queries)

Module 5: Map Design and Layout

Elements of a good map (title, legend, scale, north arrow, etc.)
Symbolization and labeling of features
Map composition in the layout view
Exporting maps
