African Women in Algebra (AWA) is an association of African women working in algebra and its applications. Founded by Dr. Sarah Nakato of Kabale University and Dr. Annet Kyomuhangi of Busitema University, AWA is a growing community dedicated to empowering African female algebraists and advancing algebra research.
African Women in Algebra Workshops
The AWA workshops are six-day events designed to empower African women mathematicians, with a particular focus on algebra. These workshops offer a supportive and collaborative research environment that addresses the specific challenges encountered by African women in mathematics.
They feature plenary and contributed talks and collaborative research sessions. The opening ceremony is attended by various audiences, such as the university community and female mathematics students and teachers from the region. The involvement of female secondary school mathematics students in the opening ceremony gives them exposure to advanced mathematical concepts and real-world applications, inspiring them to pursue careers in mathematics and STEM fields.
The workshops have brought together female African algebraists from Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda.
