WHERE A VIBRANT COMMUNITY THRIVES

EST. 2024

Previously known as Barrio San Vicente, the current Barangay San Vicente in Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines, was once a part of the neighboring municipality of Aurora in the same province. In 1941, Alfonso Catalina, who served as the Teniente (Lieutenant) del Barrio, along with five other councilors managed Barrio San Vicente and established a political system.. This occurred during the first quarter of 1960 when Mahayag was officially declared as a municipality, and certain areas from Aurora were incorporated into the newly formed local government, including Barrio San Vicente. The term "barrio" was later replaced with "barangay" in 1974 through Presidential Decree Number 557 issued by former President Marcos Sr. In 1989, a barangay election was held and the highest position in Barangay San Vicente was called Punong Barangay, while the members of the legislative body were called Sangguniang Pambarangay. Currently, the Punong Barangay is Honorable Roque E. Saquilabon.Β

The community is comprised of five puroks. The national highway runs through Puroks 1 and 2, which have the largest populations. The road is paved. The entrance to the barangay proper is at the right fork in Purok 2, near the barangay church. The health station is located further on the unpaved road in Purok 3 and the school is located at the border of Purok 3 and 5. Other health centers are Mahayag Municipal Hospital, located in Purok 1, and the RHU located in Mahayag Town Center. Purok 4 residents are geographically isolated and are closer in road distance and time to RHU and MMH than the barangay health station. The main gymnasium is located in Purok 1. The community graveyard is a shared space between Purok 1 and Barangay Poblacion to the south. Ownership is currently a point of discussion between the two barangays. Purok 3 has a working poultry farm while Purok 5 has an abandoned poultry 5 that has been inactive for at least two years. Four community water sources are located near the barangay health station in purok 3, with another water source located in purok 5, near boundary to the next barangay.

SANGGUNIANG PAMBARANGAY

Just as the other barangays in the country, San Vicente has political officials in the barangay that are elected every barangay election, who carry out different tasks to accomplish the same vision and mission. The current Barangay Chairman, Hon. Roque E. Saquilabon (in photo), is on his first term. Alongside him are the Barangay Secretary, Rendesa S. Jonologue, and the Barangay Treasurer, Jogel G. Dayaday. The Barangay Councilors each serve as a chairperson for a specific committee. The different committees are namely Peace and Order (Hon. Junrey A. Maata), Agriculture (Hon. Lolymar C. Barcinal), Appropriation (Hon. Beatriz P. Gumba), Health (Hon. Delia A. Gaviola), Infrastructure (Hon. Camilo E. Villamerno), Ways and Means (Hon. Judie S. Lumacang), and Educational Committee (Hon. Noel C. Maputi).
