System Overview
The ADVIA Centaur XP system consists of several components, such as:
The sample handler, which can hold up to 180 samples and automatically load and unload them.
The reagent manager, which can store up to 30 reagent packs and monitor their temperature, volume, and expiration date.
The reaction carousel, which can process up to 240 tests per hour and perform various steps such as pipetting, incubating, washing, and measuring.
The optical unit, which uses a xenon flash lamp and a photomultiplier tube to measure the signal intensity of the reactions.
The waste management system, which collects and separates the liquid and solid waste generated by the system.
The system computer, which controls the system functions and displays the user interface on a touch screen monitor.
The barcode scanner, which can read the barcodes on the samples, reagents, calibrators, and quality control materials.
The printer, which can print various reports and labels.
The system also has several safety features, such as:
An emergency stop button, which can stop the system operation in case of an emergency.
A fast stop button, which can pause the system operation temporarily without affecting the test results.
A door interlock switch, which prevents the system from operating when the doors are open.
A power switch, which can turn the system on or off.
A power cord, which connects the system to an electrical outlet.
A grounding wire, which provides electrical safety for the system.
Operating the System
To operate the system, you need to follow these steps:
Log onto the system using your username and password. You can also use the barcode scanner to scan your ID badge.
Select the tests you want to perform from the test menu. You can also create custom test panels or use predefined test panels.
Load the samples onto the sample handler. You can use various types of sample containers, such as tubes, cups, or microtainers. You can also load STAT samples at any time using the STAT port.
Load the reagents onto the reagent manager. You can use ReadyPack reagents, which are prepackaged and ready to use, or bulk reagents, which require manual preparation. You can also load calibrators and quality control materials onto the reagent manager.
Start the test run by pressing the start button on the touch screen monitor. The system will automatically perform the tests according to your specifications. You can monitor the status of the test run on the display area of the user interface.
Review the test results on the result screen of the user interface. You can also print, export, or transmit the results to a laboratory information system (LIS).
Unload the samples and reagents from the system. The system will alert you when a sample or reagent needs to be removed. You can also use the unload screen of the user interface to manually unload any item from the system.
Perform routine maintenance tasks on the system. The system will remind you when a maintenance task is due. You can also use the maintenance screen of the user interface to access various maintenance procedures.
