One of the questions I hear from families planning an Orlando vacation is, should we go to Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando? And the answer is it depends on your family!
Both are incredible vacations, but offer very different experiences. Your kids’ ages, heights, favorite characters, tolerance for thrill rides, and overall vacation style can make one a much better fit than the other.
🏰 Disney May Be Better If...
You’re traveling with younger kids.
Disney has a huge selection of attractions that don't have a minimum height requirement, which can make it easier for families with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers to experience rides together.
Your kids love Disney characters.
If Mickey, princesses, Pixar, Star Wars, or classic Disney movies are a BIG deal in your house, there’s something pretty special about watching your child see those characters and stories come to life.
Your family prefers gentler attractions.
Disney has thrill rides, but there are also plenty of slower rides, shows, character experiences, playgrounds, and other things to do between the bigger attractions.
You want the full resort experience.
Walt Disney World has four theme parks, water parks, over 20 Disney Resort hotels, extensive dining options, and complimentary transportation options for Disney Resort guests. You can easily make Disney the entire vacation without leaving the resort area.
Disney is especially great for:
✨ Babies, toddlers & younger kids
✨ First theme-park vacations
✨ Disney-loving families
✨ Character experiences
✨ Families who want lots of non-thrill attractions
✨ Multi-generational trips
🌎 Universal May Be Better If…
Your kids are older or taller.
Universal has plenty for younger children, but many of its headline attractions have minimum height requirements. Once your kids are tall enough and excited about bigger rides, Universal really starts to shine.
Your family LOVES thrill rides.
If roller coasters and more intense attractions are the highlight of a theme-park vacation, Universal has some fantastic options.
Your kids are obsessed with Harry Potter, Nintendo, or DreamWorks.
For the right fandom, walking into these worlds can be just as exciting as seeing Cinderella Castle for a Disney fan.
You want a different kind of theme-park vacation.
Universal Orlando now offers multiple theme parks, including Epic Universe, giving families even more options than they had just a few years ago.
Universal is especially great for:
🎢 Older kids & teens
🎮 Nintendo fans
⚡ Harry Potter fans
🦖 Jurassic World fans
🎢 Thrill seekers
🌎 Families excited to experience Epic Universe
This is where I usually give Disney the advantage.
At Walt Disney World, many attractions can be enjoyed at any height. Universal does have attractions, shows, interactive areas, and play spaces designed for younger guests, but height requirements can limit which rides smaller children can experience.
Before choosing between the two, I recommend checking every child's height and comparing it with the attractions your family considers must-dos.
You don't want to plan an entire vacation around a ride your child has been talking about for months only to discover they're an inch too short!
Neither resort automatically wins this category. Instead, I would look at your individual child. Consider:
• How do they handle crowds and waiting?
• Are loud noises or dark rides difficult?
• Do they seek out or avoid intense movement?
• Are characters exciting or overwhelming?
• What are their biggest special interests?
• How much downtime will they need?
For some kids, familiarity with Disney characters and gentler attractions can make Disney a great fit. For others, a strong interest in Nintendo, Harry Potter, dinosaurs, or another Universal experience may make Universal the clear winner. The goal isn't to fit the child to the vacation, it's to build the vacation around the child.
So… Which One Wins?
Choose Disney if: your family has younger children, loves Disney characters and storytelling, wants plenty of attractions everyone can experience together, or wants that classic Disney vacation experience.
Choose Universal if: you have older kids or teens, your family loves thrill rides, or Harry Potter, Nintendo, Jurassic World, and Universal's other franchises are the main attraction.
Choose BOTH if: you have the time and budget!
There really isn't one theme park resort that's "better" for every family. The better question is: Which one is better for YOUR family?
That's exactly why personalized vacation planning matters. Two families can have kids the exact same ages and still need completely different vacations.
