Our Open House Schedule
For our annual "Christmas Eve Open House," we have prepared for our guests a special set of presentations, certain to delight and engage audiences of all ages and interests. We invite you to join us in the parlour, mingle with our members and let yourself become part of the show!
10:00 a.m. ~ Welcome to the Adventurers Club: The Adventurers Club is the favorite social gathering spot of London’s elite, including some of the most celebrated people of the Victorian age. Come join us in the parlour to meet our members and participate in some lively discussion!
10:45 a.m. ~ Upstairs & Downstairs: Get an insider's view of the workings of a London Club; Learn the British way to serve tea, set a table or take part in a formal dinner, or let the children practice their letters using pen and ink.
11:25 a.m. ~ A Fancy-Dress Déjeuner: Mr Pickwick and his estimable Club companions; Mr Tupman, Mr Winkle and Mr Snodgrass attend Mrs Leo Hunter’s Fancy-Dress Dejeuner , where the grand dame premieres her epic poem, 'Ode to an Expiring Frog' while portraying Minerva. The company also expects the highly anticipated cause célèbre arrival of the famous Captain Charles Fitz-Marshall.
11:30 a.m. ~ Writers' Presentations: The roots of English literature run old and deep, and the authors of the Victorian period are some of its champions. You are invited to a rare experience with Oscar Wilde and other literary greats, as they show you some of the finest poetry and prose of our age, up close and personal.
12:15 p.m. ~ Pre-Raphaelite Artists Salon: Join artists from the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and friends to sketch from live models from romanticized medieval and classical themes. Pencils and pads are provided, all ages are welcome!
1:15 p.m. ~ Military Demonstrations: Engaging discussions of military techniques, tactics and the latest weaponry, skillfully augmented with detailed scale models to simulate famous battles, brought to life right before your eyes!
2:00 p.m. ~ Explorations in Science: From the distant past to the ever expanding future, scientific knowledge is growing daily. Join H.G. Wells in an exploration of what has been learned about our earliest civilisations and wonder at the classical monsters of the deep. Discover the forces that bind our world together and drive us ever forward in our quest for understanding the universe around us.
2:30 p.m. ~ Discourse with Dignitaries: Hear famous, accomplished Victorians tell their stories through interviews, presentations and discussions.
3:00 p.m. ~ Tell-Tale Theatre: Put yourself into a proper holiday humour and relish the dark tales of the master of the macabre, American author Edgar Allan Poe, as he joins with other literary luminaries to present a chilling Christmas tradition.
3:30 p.m. ~ London’s Best Dressed: The holiday season brings visitors to London bedecked in their finest attire. Lady Franklin wishes to honor some of London’s best dressed guests with a contest to name “London’s Most Fashionable Lady and Gentleman.” You are cordially invited to join her and her special guest judges to witness an exciting hour of sartorial splendor!
4:30 p.m. ~ Christmas Salon: An engaging and entertaining Christmas Salon full of ghost stories, conjurers, fairy tales, songs and games!
5:30 p.m. ~ Christmas Carols: Be uplifted by expertly performed traditional Christmas carols, led by the Swedish opera sensation, Madame Jenny Lind!
6:15 p.m. ~ Formal Toasting: Marvel at the wit and extravagance of a traditional Officers’ Mess formal toasting ceremony!
