#4 | Terrariums

Materials:

☐ Jar with lid,

☐ ½ c. pebbles/ rocks,

☐ ¼-½ c. activated charcoal,

☐ 1 c. potting soil,

☐ chia & wheatgrass seeds,

☐ water

Directions:

  1. Cover the bottom with an inch-thick layer of pebbles or rocks to create a false drainage system for the plant roots.

  2. Add a thin layer of activated charcoal it keeps the water fresh, and prevents mold and bacteria from building up. About ¼-½ inch deep.

  3. Add a layer of potting soil, 1-2 inches thick. No higher than half the height of the jar.

  4. Sprinkle wheatgrass seeds in the center and chia seeds around the sides (the wheatgrass will grow taller than the chia).

  5. Lightly water and seal (it is best if you spray or dribble).

  6. Place in a window with indirect sunlight and watch it grow!

Tips & Troubleshooting:

  • Condensation: If condensation does not form on the inside of the container this indicates the need for water. If the condensation is too thick to see inside the terrarium this means there is too much water. Open the lid for a day.

  • The plants wilt: This indicates the need for water.

  • Putting Things in a Narrow Opening: Use a funnel or make one from paper to help add the charcoal, soil, and seeds.

  • Light: The key is gentle natural light. Try to put the terrarium in a south facing window.

  • Aaaaagh! If things are not working do not be afraid to take the lid off, try a different window, or start over.
