Learn About the Adventure

PLANNING NOTE: Discussions for #1 and #3 can be done before heading out on your hike (#2). #4 & #6 can be done on the hike.

Current requirements can be seen HERE as well as found in your rank manual - along with great ideas for completion. We guide you through the completion of the requirements in bold below.

Complete Requirements 1-3 plus at least one other.

  1. With your parent, guardian, or other caring adult, name and collect the Cub Scout Six Essentials you need for a hike. Tell your den leader what you would need to add to your list to prepare for rain.

  2. Go for a short hike with your den or family, and carry your own gear. Show you know how to get ready for this hike.

  3. Do the following:

(a) Listen while your leader reads the Outdoor Code. Talk about how you can be clean in your outdoor manners

(b) Listen while your leader reads the Leave No Trace Principles for Kids. Discuss why you should "Trash Your Trash."

(c) Apply the Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace Principles for Kids on your Tiger den and pack outings. After one outing, share what you did to demonstrate the principles you discussed.

  1. While on the hike, find three different kinds of plants, animals, or signs that animals have been on the trail. List what you saw in your Tiger Handbook.

  2. Participate in an outdoor pack meeting or pack campfire. Sing a song or act out a skit with your Tiger den as part of the program.

  3. Find two different trees and two different types of plants that grow in your area. Write their names in your Tiger Handbook.

  4. Visit a nature center, zoo, or another outside place with your family or den. Learn more about two animals, and write down two interesting things about them in your Tiger Handbook.

#1-2 | Cub Scout 6 Essentials & Hiking

PREPARE: Cub Scout Six Essentials

It’s time to get ready for a hike! What do you need to bring? There can be a lot so Scouting has narrowed it down to just the essentials! That being said, you could always mix in a few other items depending on the weather and time of year. Might you need a raincoat or insect repellant too? But, let’s get started with the first six:

Can you find these items for your daypack?

☐ Filled water bottle

☐ Flashlight

☐ First Aid Kit

☐ Sun protection - a hat and/ or sunscreen

☐ Whistle

☐ snack

HIKE

Are you ready for a hike!

Did you…

  • Pack your Cub Scout 6 Essentials?

  • Check the weather? What could you add if you might get rain?

  • Wear appropriate shoes?

  • Show your preparations to your adult partner?

#3 | Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace

The Outdoor Code

Leave No Trace

As an American, I will do my best to –

Be clean in my outdoor manners.

Be careful with fire.

Be considerate in the outdoors.

Be conservation minded.

    1. Know before you go

    2. Choose the right path

    3. Trash your trash

    4. Leave what you find

    5. Be careful with fire

    6. Respect Wildlife

    7. Be kind to other visitors

How can you be clean in your outdoor manners? Why should you "trash your trash?"

Practice these principles the next time you are on an outing (that hike you are taking for #2 would be a great time!).

#4 & #6 | Into the Wild!

Be mindful and aware on your hike. Use Outdoor Scavenger Hunt to find plants, animals, and the signs of nature!

While out, identify two different types of trees and two different types of plants that grow in your area.

#5 | Get Out!

Participate in an outdoor pack meeting or pack campfire. Sing a song or act out a skit with your Tiger den as part of the program.

This link has a nice assortment of skits that are appropriate to the Tiger level. Nothing too complicated and all of them are fun! Skits - https://bit.ly/TigerSkits

#7 | Into the Wild!

Visit nature and animals with your den or family! There are a lot of places that would be fun to visit but here are a few of our favorites around Houston:
