The 'Dark Side of Families' makes reference to the title of an edited volume by David Finkelhor et al. published in 1983 based on papers presented at the National Conference for Family Violence Researchers in Durham, New Hampshire, US, in 1981. The late 1970s and 1980s saw the emergence of a broad spectrum of family issues as subjects of socio-political concern and academic interest in the US and UK. They also marked the arrival of the first publications on parent abuse. This reference pays homage to those early days of family violence research, when violence and abuse within the family was being brought to light. It also makes allusions to the fact that, in comparison with the other forms of abuse and violence within the family, parent abuse and Adult Child to Parent Abuse in particular still remain in the dark.
