When we are traveling I always pack a coloring book for each member of the family. It is the perfect travel activity for just about every situation. A small bag of crayons for the kids and some colored pencils for me and we are ready for flight delays, long waits for food and even a 6-hour drive.

At home we have an art table set up in our living room. There are a variety of coloring instruments and each of the boys has some coloring books and paper they can choose from. I have my own shelf of coloring books and coloring instruments that the boys know are just for mommies. I love to turn on some instrumental music while we all sit at the table and color. This is a go-to activity for that crazy time when my four-year-old is getting home from school and my two-year-old is just waking up from nap.

Recently, while checking out at the grocery store, I noticed among the magazine collections several small "pocket book" sized adult coloring books. I idly picked one up and glanced at the price - $5.99 . I thumbed through it and my first thought was the booklet looked like an old Dover coloring book. Adult coloring books are all the rage now. We got one for my elderly mother-in-law over the holidays - big images for a sort of paint-by-numbers-without-the-numbers enrichment.

Dover publishing was way ahead of that curve by about 30 years or more, offering a wide range of historical, architectural, fashion and other themed line drawing books for people of all ages to enjoy. And admittedly, they're fun. They're great for doodling in between - and to inspire - creative endeavors, through phone meetings and waiting for doctors appointments or in airports or airplanes.

For a coloring book, you typically want line drawings that lend themselves to colored pencil work. I didn't theme this little prototype book, but just looked for a variety of images. You can configure your search however, you want, but start by going to Google Images:

You can print your booklet one of two ways - single sided or double sided. I like single sided because then you're not coloring on the back of your next image. But you can also print double sided if you want to use less paper.

Betts has recently fielded more queries on coloring books than any other art therapy-related topic. Along with her AATA colleagues, she has advised publishers and retailers on ways to more accurately market and display their products without sending misleading messages. And she stopped short of promoting coloring as a stress reliever, as studies confirming this claim are lacking. There are many times when I suggest adult coloring books to patients, and they look at me like perhaps we should be switching seats. However, time and again, they come back to me and tell me how beneficial they find them to be. Many psychologists and therapists "prescribe" these to patients for various reasons, and many occupational therapists prescribe them as well! I will also let you know that I practice what I preach, when I was laid up in bed for eight weeks after major surgery, I devoured adult coloring books. When I need to shift my focus or practice my own stress reduction, I break these books out. They have so many uses and purposes that many are not aware of, beyond the obvious outcomes of beauty and enjoyment. Let's look at their uses a little closer.

1. Did you have any idea that the "prescription" of adult coloring stems all the way back to the late and great psychologist Carl Jung? Well it did. He was always ahead of his time. Jung used it thinking it would help his patient's access their subconscious and new self-knowledge. [3] We now know that many psychologists suggest this to patients as an alternative to meditation, as a means of relaxation, and as a calming tool. It can help the individual focus on the act of coloring intricate pictures for hours on end, vs. focusing on intrusive and troubling thoughts.

2. Adult coloring books can help with a number of emotional and mental health issues. For many, boredom, lack of structure, and stress are the greatest triggers they have. This applies to individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders, stress disorders, depressive disorders, eating and binge eating disorders, anger management issues, and substance abuse issues. The time and focus that adult coloring takes helps the individual remove the focus from the negative issues and habits, and focus them in a safe and productive way.

5. Believe it or not, coloring has intellectual benefits as well. It utilizes areas of the brain that enhance focus and concentration. It also helps with problem solving and organizational skills. This may sound strange, and like perhaps the usefulness is being stretched, but it is all true. Our frontal lobes are responsible for these higher level activities and functions of the brain, and coloring detailed pictures activates all those properties. Think of considering complex color schemes, and using the brain to balance and make the picture aesthetically pleasing. [1]

6. Coloring utilizes both hemispheres of the brain, right and left. When we are thinking about balance, color choices, applying colored pencil to paper, we are working on problem solving and fine motor skills. We have talked a great deal about where they would be suggested by psychologists, but this is where they can very useful for occupational therapy as well. Imagine all the areas of retraining of the brain and skills training that can be accomplished with coloring increasingly difficult designs. The individual can start on easier items, and work their way up.

Adult coloring books clearly help serve many purposes that are beneficial. They can be so much more than the color by number that people might be thinking they are. They can be focused, therapeutic, relaxing, calming, problem solving, and organizational. As you can see, they are highly effective for many reasons, and the ideas behind them have stood the test of time, even if they feel like they are only the latest fad. Try one out and you may just surprise yourself. If not, at least you have something pretty to hand on your fridge!

The vast selection available today includes abstract images, mandalas, and your beloved characters ranging from Marvel to Disney, and anything in between (like famous Facebook kitty, Pusheen). If you prefer, you can shift the scenery as you explore a secret garden, lost ocean, or perhaps an enchanted forest. Themes aside, these activity books have often been best sellers and claim to provide users with the opportunity to connect with their inner artists, reduce stress, and live happier lives.

Previous studies have provided support for adult coloring books. Curry and Kasser induced anxiety in a group of undergraduates, provided them either with a blank page, a plaid print, or a mandala, and instructed them to color for 20 minutes. Both designs reduced anxiety, although the mandala was slightly more effective. However, in a replication study by van der Vennet and Serice, no difference was observed between for those who had plaid and blank pages, yet the mandala group still displayed a reduction in anxiety.

In a recent study, Mantzios and Giannou utilized randomized controlled experiments to explore the differences between coloring and free-drawing. In one experiment there were no differences in between an unguided coloring group and free-drawing. However, in the second experiment participants were assigned to either a guided or unguided mandala coloring group, and although no differences were noted in mindfulness, those in the guided group did show a reduction in anxiety.

Adult coloring books have been shown to influence more than anxiety. Researchers at the University of Otago randomly assigned participants to a coloring a logic-puzzle group and found that after a week of daily practice displayed significantly lower levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms. In a study of individuals ages 19-67 participants engaged in coloring independently and in an open studio environment with an art therapist. Both scenarios helped participants to reduce stress and negative affect, however, the session with the art therapist prompted significant enhancements of personal perceptions pertaining to creativity, self-efficacy, and positive effect.

While children's coloring books feature cartoon characters and simple designs, adult coloring books have intricate patterns of flowers, artwork, mandalas or animals. Books are available for purchase, and you can print free coloring pages online. For people who prefer a digital version, many coloring apps are available for mobile devices.

Although coloring isn't the ultimate cure for stress and anxiety, sitting down for a long coloring session holds great value. As you color, pay attention to your breathing rhythm, ensuring steady, full breaths from your diaphragm, and tune into your heart rate periodically if you can.

Try to let go of judgments or expectations and enjoy the simple beauty of coloring. It doesn't matter if your picture is neat or messy. The only thing that matters is if you found enjoyment and relaxation while coloring.

Adult coloring books have, over the past two years, become one of the biggest sales phenomena to hit the modern publishing industry. Approximately 12 million adult coloring books sold in the US in 2015, boosting the sale of adult nonfiction by 6.6 percent and causing a global colored-pencil shortage.

For a recent study published in the Creativity Research Journal, psychologists gave 115 young women either a coloring book or a book of puzzles. Each day for seven days, the participants colored in pictures of animals, mandalas, and nature scenes, or completed non-artistic puzzles, like Sudoku and word searches.
