Challenge - Build an interactive timeline that could be used in an eLearning course.
I chose to build the timeline on the history of instructional design because it aligned with my studies. The timeline describes some major events and philosophies in the industry.
I wanted a design that worked when the user hovered over certain points instead of clicking on the points. To make the design more learner-centric, the hover points needed to have enough surface area to make it easy to maneuver. In addition, the information from the previous point should disappear when a new information was available on the screen. By including the text as part of the interaction, the size of the point could be enlarged without a lot of unusable space. The instructions at the top were included so that learners knew exactly what steps should be taken.
I began developing this tool in Microsoft PowerPoint because it was the tool with which I was most familiar with. After completing a working interaction for the timeline, I challenged myself to use a different tool capable of providing similar or increased interactivity. Storyline is similar to PowerPoint, yet provided a challenge to learn a tool that is common in the instructional design industry. I recreated the original timeline in this technology with the interactions storyboarded and prototyped in PowerPoint.
Results - A timeline that can be modified for multiple purposes
Solutions - This timeline has multiple applications. It can be used to convey a variety of information in any type of course. It can provide the history of a company or department, present review information in a format the learners can control the amount of time that it takes them to read.
