Tap the Graphite Pencil in the toolbar. Drag up or down over the Size control to set the brush tip size, and then do the same for Flow to control the amount applied with each stroke. Tap Color and pick from built-in color themes, or mix a color using the color Picker. Finally, refine additional settings and start sketching.

First, open the photo that you want to work with. To open your photo, go to File > Open, choose your photo, and click Open. Now, before we get started on the Photoshop sketch effect, just check a couple of things:

Now we are going to create the base sketch. Select the Background layer and go to Layer > New > Layer Via Copy to duplicate the Background layer, and then drag that new layer to the top of the layers in the Layers panel. Press D on your keyboard to reset the swatches and go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Sketch > Photocopy and choose the settings below:

Now we are going to create a draft Photoshop sketch filter. Go to Layer > New > Layer Via Copy to duplicate the Base Sketch layer. Pick the Lasso Tool (L), click anywhere inside the canvas, choose Free Transform, and increase the width and height to 105% as shown below:

The next step in learning how to make a picture look like a drawing is creating a rough sketch. Select the Background layer and go to Layer > New > Layer Via Copy to duplicate the Background layer, and then drag that new layer to the top of the layers in the Layers panel. Go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Artistic > Cutout and choose the settings below:

Now we are going to create more rough sketch layers using the same method. So repeat Step 1 and Step 2 in this section, but in Step 1 instead of using the settings we used the previous time, use the new settings below:

Now we are going to group all these rough sketch Photoshop layers. While the layer RS_6 is selected, Shift-click on the RS_1 layer to select these two layers and all other layers between them. Then go to Layer > New > Group from Layers to create a new group from the selected layers and name it Rough Sketch.

Now we are going to create some subtle shading for this photo to sketch effect in Photoshop. Select the Background layer and go to Layer > New > Layer Via Copy to duplicate the Background layer, and then drag that new layer to the top of the layers in the Layers panel. Go to Filter > Stylize > Find Edges and then go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate.

In this step, we are going to add some noise to our photo to sketch Photoshop design. Select the Shading_1 layer and go to Layer > New > Layer to create a new layer and name it Noise.

Now we are going to add a nice color look to our Photoshop sketch effect. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves to create a new curves adjustment layer and name it Color Look.

Now we are going to make some final adjustments to our photo to sketch effect in Photoshop. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter to create a new photo filter adjustment layer and name it Photo Tint.

Now we are going to add some vibrance and saturation to the Photoshop pencil sketch effect. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Vibrance to create a new vibrance adjustment layer and name it Overall Vibrance/Saturation.

If you would like to create an even more advanced sketch with a paint effect as shown below, and just by using a single click, then check out the TechnicalArt sketch Photoshop action. The action works so that you just brush over the areas that you want to remain in paint, play the action, and the action will do everything for you, giving you fully layered and customizable results.

Once you've created a sketch, you're able to send said piece of media to Illustrator or Photoshop, scaling your work up "4x" to print, if that's what you're all about, or creating a layered PSD with Photoshop.

The layers bit isn't as exciting as you might imagine. While you are able to keep your background image (if you have one) separate from your sketch, that's about the extent of it all. This isn't like full Photoshop where you're able to have as many layers as you want.

But there is a question that boggles my mind. In recent future I also want to invest sketching and going deeper to create artworks. When I check for Illustrator artworks or freehand drawing videos all of them are nearly cartoon based figures. But when I look at photoshop and sketchbook artwork they are magnificent.

Digital sketching is all about taking your creative ideas to the screen. If you want to learn new skills beyond traditional sketching, now is the time to get comfortable with digital tools that can recreate the familiar experiences of drawing, texturing, shading, and coloring -- all on your tablet.

Step 2: Select a Color Palette

Once you have the rough sketch, you can choose the colors you want to use together and make a swatch. When you decide on colors, you can fill them in on a separate layer underneath the sketch. The biggest advantage to working in layers is the ability to go back and edit or add items.

Step 4: Add Textures and Final Details

To give your digital sketching more depth, you can add textures (this one features the grunge texture in the background) and other small details, like light effects.

Digital sketching is an essential step in any digital drawing or painting process. Once you learn how to draw digitally, you can easily take your work to the next level in Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.

This article will describe how Adobe Photoshop can quickly and easily be used to produce a sketch from any digital image. This can be useful during the laboratory examination of items or the processing of crime scenes.

The production of sketches is a crucial step in the proper documentation of evidence, both in the laboratory and at crime scenes. Normally a rough sketch is made first followed by a smooth sketch if needed. The rough sketch does not need to be perfect and is produced either during the processing of a scene or during the bench examination of an item. At a scene, its purpose includes the documentation of objects in relation to each other, recording of measurements and positioning of evidence. In the lab, a sketch is produced denoting any evidence which may be present on that item (i.e. trace materials, blood staining). A smooth sketch is a more polished scale diagram, often produced for court.1

Normally, the rough sketch is simply drawn free-hand on paper with a pen and ruler. Plastic templates can be purchased to assist in making rough sketches. These templates contain commonly found items (i.e. weapons, furniture) which can be traced onto a sketch. In the lab, hand drawn templates of items such as clothing can be used but may not reflect the true appearance of the item being examined. However, the use of portable computer technology (laptop, printer and appropriate software) can greatly assist in producing quality sketches.

Figures 1 and 3 are regular color images of a real and a mock crime scene. Figures 2 and 4 are the sketch versions of Figures 1 and 3 respectively. As illustrated, the sketches are shown in 3-D format with appropriate information labeled such as measurements, descriptions of patterns and general scene notes. Considering it may be difficult to accurately record 3-D information, such as bloodstain patterns on adjacent walls in an indoor environment, this technique would provide the scene analyst with another tool with which to document the evidence. This technique can also be used to create an accurate sketch from any items being examined in the laboratory as opposed to drawing free-hand diagrams which rely on the skill of the lab analyst and may not be a true reflection of the item being examined.

The use of Photoshop software and computer technology, such as a portable printer, allows the lab scientist or crime scene investigator to quickly and easily produce a sketch from any image. This technique is not intended to replace an overall sketch, nor to be performed on every image taken, but just to provide an additional medium on which to record evidence such as bloodstain patterns and footwear marks. These sketches will accurately illustrate in a more 3-D format the scene being processed or item being examined instead of having to rely on the need to draw free hand or the use of pre-made hand drawn/plastic templates.

When you're done, lower the Opacity of this layer by dragging the slider in the Layers panel. This will allow us to use the sketch as a support for the next stage of drawing, without creating a jungle of lines. Switch your reference to the original photo.

Now you know how to draw with Photoshop. You know how to draw the first sketch, how to create the line art, how to add the colors, how to shade, and how to finish the artwork. Now, using Photoshop to draw doesn't sound like a crazy idea anymore! 17dc91bb1f
