I no longer have the driver to print to a PDF. It had worked for as long as I can remember. I have the latest version of Adobe Reader DC and run under Windows 8.1 (also tried a Repair). I have seen the instructions below, but in step 4, the Documents\*.pdf (Adobe PDF) is not listed in the drop-down menu. Looks like lots of other people are having this problem, but I've been unable to find a solution. Thanks in advance.

The free Adobe Reader never, repeat never, repeat yet again never provided the support to create PDF in any way whatsoever including the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver. That particular feature has only been available as part of Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro. The only other method by which this feature is installed is via an installation of Adobe FrameMaker which installs the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver in support of PDF creation.

Acrobat Reader does not and never did include the PDF printer. It comes with the paid-for Acrobat product (Acrobat Pro, Acrobat Standard). Try a REPAIR on your paid-for Acrobat product. Repairing Acrobat Reader will do nothing.

Possibly I was using OpenOffice (free software) to do that in the past, but I don't think so. Both OpenOffice Draw and OpenOffice Writer have a "File - Export as PDF" option. I just tried that on a JPG file and it worked fine. So I will use that.

I may be late to the party, but you are not entirely correct. I represented Adobe and supported Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, Pagemaker, and Framemaker +SGML, plus a few other now deprecated products between 1991 and 1995. There WAS a free PDF print driver available that did not require the purchase of any Acrobat product. This was before PDF integration was native to the Mac OS and eventually Windows. It is no longer the case. The people here saying they had a PDF print driver without owning purchased Acrobat product are correct.

In the timeframe of MacOS 9 and earlier, there was no such free PDF driver from Adobe, maybe other sources, but not Adobe. PageMaker and FrameMaker came with such a driver, but they were Adobe products.

I have purchased Adobe DC Pro and my adobe PDF printer has stopped working, too! It has worked for years with no problems and just STOPPED FOR NO APPARENT reason about a month or so ago. I want it back. I was never given a disk for it so these instructions are meaningless to me. I know how to install drivers and have been loading, installing, updating and repairing printers for 40 years now. Please address the problem and stop deflecting.

Assuming that the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance is not showing in the printers control panel, try the Help=>Repair Installation function in Acrobat. If it is showing, but not working, delete the printer, reboot, and then try the Help=>Repair Installation function in Acrobat.

What was that called please? I have followed Acrobat history keenly since 1.0. I remember a free PostScript printer driver. I remember PDFwriter, a non-Postscript printer driver included in Acrobat Exchange 1.0, 2.0 and 2.1, removed after Acrobat 5.0, but it was never free to my knowledge. PageMaker and Distiller bundled Distiller.

I have a dynamic pdf file where users complete text fields, drop down lists and image fields. I also have lock all fields button script that I found in this forum to lock all form fields once user completes it. I was wondering is there a way to save or produce a flat static pdf file in the end? Sometime the dynamic form can increase in size due to the size of image inside the image field. So is there a way to flatten all its contents in the end and produce a smaller copy of that file? This way any user even with old version of adobe reader can open it since its no longer a dynamic form.

I know sometimes I can do it by printing it as an "adobe pdf" file but it does not allow me when have the permissions set-up. I dont want to give full access too. What permissions do I need to change to enable this? Is there another way to flatten a dynamic file in the end? Has anyone done this?

This is were I have a problem. Since these LC forms are password protected with a permission pwd to prevent the form from being edited, I am unable to print this form to PDF. It gives out the following message:

Alternatively, I thought another way to flatten pdfs might be to save the pdf file as jpeg image or any image file. But that doesn't work when the permission pwd is enabled as well since it shows the message "Insufficient permissions for image extraction". So whats the solution in this case? what are my options to flatten the pdf files in the end when the permission password is enabled?

I've tested and found the "Microsoft Print to PDF" printer driver WILL allow you to print a "password-protected" XFA (Static or Dynamic) to pdf (effectively flattening the form) unlike the "Adobe PDF" printer driver.

My name is Justin and i work for Desktop support for a company. Im currently having a issue with installing a PDF printer, we install Adobe Writer 9 Pro through the network using advertised programs on Win XP. Whenever i install the application it does not seem to automatically install a PDF printer on my pritner list. When i attempt to manually add it i get through all the steps sucessfully, however upon clicking finish, it then opens a directory box which wants me to point it somewhere, when i click cancel it then says something about inserting disk. Where i work discs are dissallowed, can anyone tell me where it wants me to point it or any potential workaround that i would not have to specify a path? My assumption is that it wants something from system 32 or adobe's program files but it does not specify.

I also am having problems with my PDF Printer. It worked fine for years, then a few months ago it disappeared from the printer list and now I can't print to PDF. I tried your Solution 3, Mannually Install PDF Printer, as described above but my file structure for Acrobat 6.0 doesn't look like what you described for Acrobat 10.0.

My guess is you have Reader 11.1, not Acrobat. If you have Acrobat 11.0.09 the printer should automatically be installed. Reader does not include the print driver, the latter simply being a PS printer driver. To get PDFs you also need Distiller that is part of the Acrobat release.

I have same problem in macOS Sierra (10.12.1). When install Acrobat DC, the "Adobe PDF" printer don't install on my mac preferences. I need them for make a booklet build on Indesign. (work with .ps and distyler after is very boring).

I'm having an issue installing the pdf printer driver on my computer. I tried the multiple things that are stated above and nothing has worked. It seems when I did the windows update my printer spool stooped working, so I had to uninstall and re-install all the printer drivers. I have adobe cs6 and when I go to print settings, the print to pdf driver would appear, now it does not. Any help would be much appreciated.

Joe - Did you ever get help on this? I just recently downloaded the free trial for Acrobat Adobe Reader X1 and the PDF printer did not automatically install to my printers and I can't figure out to add it. Please let me know if you figured it out

As a quick recap now that your PDF printer driver is installed, anytime you want to print a PDF, go to File, and select Print. From the Print Window, select the option for Adobe PDF as your printer of choice, and click Print. You will be asked to name the new PDF file and choose the location you want to save it. Once you click Save, your PDF will be ready for you to access.

If for some reason your Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver is not appearing under the Available Printers section of your Control Panel on Windows, try going to the Help window in Acrobat, and select the Repair Installation option. If you see your Adobe PDF printer show up, but still fails to function correctly, you will need to delete the printer, reboot your computer, and try Repair Installation option again.

As of Windows 10, it is possible to print to a PDF without Adobe or another third-party printer driver. To print using the onboard Windows 10 tools, go to File, then Print and select the option called Microsoft Print to PDF as your printer. Name and save the file at the location you want accordingly, and choose OK.

As a quick note, according to Adobe, there is a glitch in the latest MacOS Mojave (v.10.14) that creates an error when you try to print a PDF with the Save as Adobe PDF option. To fix it, you will need to launch the Automator program, and select the Third Party Automator Actions option. This will bring up a window where you will be asked to check a box to Enable Automator actions from third parties. By checking that box, the error message should be resolved, and you should be able to print your documents to Adobe PDF.

You might have difficulty creating a PDF if you try to do so using the free Adobe Reader, which does not support the ability to create PDF documents. There is, however, one other way to install a print to PDF driver from another Adobe product other than Acrobat. That is by installing Adobe FrameMaker, which also installs the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver.

I am used to creating separations in Illlustrator on a Windows PC. I switched to MAC, and I cannot figure out how to print a PDF so that I can separate my screens for printing. Is there a PDF Driver to install for MAC? 152ee80cbc
